〔第部分〕(1) Introduction to Social Assistance Systems in Uganda

    (2) Effect of a Reunification Cash Grant on Reintegration of Children into Family-Based Care in Uganda

講者Mr. Aloysious Nnyombi (Lecturer, Department of Social Work and Social Administration at Makerere University)

主持:臺大社工系 汪書華 副教授

講者介紹:

Aloysious Nnyombi is a PhD candidate of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna. He has worked on diverse aspects of research and policy on social protection in different African countries, including Uganda and South Sudan. He is particularly interested in establishing coordination and oversight structures and developing operational tools for social protection.

演講內容:

This research was designed to evaluate the impact of adding a reunification cash grant to the reintegration of children living in residential care back into family-based care. There was no statistical evidence that the cash grant facilitated the reintegration of children. This is nested in several reasons, mainly the cash grant being a one-off and very minimal.

〔第部分〕 (1) Introduction to Social Assistance Systems in Kenya

    (2) Effect of Schooling on Anemia and Nutritional Status: Evidence from a Universal Primary Education Policy

講者Dr. Felix Muchomba (Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, Rutgers University,)

主持:臺大社工系 汪書華 副教授

講者介紹:

Dr. Muchomba’s research examines how policies and institutions influence the well-being of girls and women. Under this research agenda, Dr. Muchomba has examined nutrition, sexual and reproductive health and other issues that are pertinent to low-income families, with a focus on Eastern Africa, South Asia, and immigrants in the U.S. He is currently studying policy levers that may reduce social and economic disparities in maternal health.

演講內容:

In 1994–1995, Ethiopia abolished primary school tuition fees and increased educational investments, which raised primary school enrollment and retention. I used an instrumented regression-discontinuity design to examine the effect on anemia and body mass index (BMI) of an increase in length of schooling resulting from the reforms, as a natural experiment. Data were obtained from Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys. Results indicate that each additional year of schooling reduced anemia risk and increased BMI.
