This speech, titled “Good AI for Good,” addresses the hidden environmental, economic, and social costs associated with the development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI). While AI offers significant advancements, it incurs substantial hidden costs that can undermine its benefits if not addressed holistically. Environmental costs include high energy consumption and carbon emissions from training and operating AI models. Economically, the expenses of specialized hardware, continuous software updates, and data management are significant. Socially, AI development can exacerbate inequalities and lead to job displacement. The speech proposes a “Cradle to Cradle” approach to mitigate these hidden costs, emphasizing sustainable practices across the entire AI lifecycle. This includes using energy-efficient algorithms, leveraging renewable energy, conducting comprehensive cost-benefit analyses, ensuring fair and inclusive AI practices, and implementing robust reskilling programs. By addressing these hidden costs, the speech advocates for a balanced and sustainable development of AI technologies that contribute positively to society and the environment.
