潛規則老師怎麼不早點教我?! 文/熊偌均 Melissa Hsiung.
For next
week, September 16, read and take notes on these two articles:
CET 3: /i/ 和 /ɪ/ 的辨別
in No. 71, May/June 2012, p. 12-14; and 「格式」就是禮貌:英文標點符號的10大規
則 in English Island 英語島 48, January 2020.
Be ready
to mention some of the main points of the articles in class!
Note: Do
NOT "cross" your "i"s, "j"s and "z"s
in English!
Also, "second
grade" means 「小二」! It should be "eleventh grade" (for
senior high school).
And the
abbreviation for "Professor" is "Prof." – not "Pro."
Staple at a slant in the upper left hand corner
of the paper.
8.
We'll have our first dictation today: Dictation
#1: /ɪ/ vs. /i/, with final /-t/.
Write the
correct spelling and IPA symbols
for each word you hear.
All of
the words will have only one syllable, and all with end with the
/t/ sound.
The vowel
will always be either /ɪ/ as
in "pit" or /i/ as in "Pete".
For dictations
– listen closely to all instructions!
1. Use a full-sized
sheet of paper; do not use a half-sheet or
other small size of paper;
you can reuse the same paper for future dictations. The
instructor has paper if needed.
2.
When using loose-leaf notebook paper, start on the front of the paper, i.e. theholes go to the left.
3.
Write out your full English name, with family name, e.g. Sarah
Chou, not just Sarah.
4.
Write the score like this: 80%, not 75 + 5
and not 80/100.
5. Do
not write any check marks anywhere on the
test paper.
If an item is wrong, mark it with an "x"; if it's correct,
make no mark by it,
and do not mark a big check mark over the
whole test to indicate "no mistakes";
just write 100% in the upper right hand
corner of the paper;
do not underline or double underline it or draw circles.
6.
When you mark a paper, sign your name in the lower
right hand corner of the paper.
Also, print out
the above IPA symbols
handout, and bring it to every class.

the paper.
Write
your both your given and family name on each
sheet, if there is more than one sheet,
and if
the sheets aren't stapled together.
Use single
spacing.
Make
sure to use English punctuation and not Chinese 全形
punctuation.
Remember to leave a space after most punctuation
and a
space before and after punctuation in pairs,
e.g. quotation marks and parentheses.
(Note that "punctuation" is uncountable; but you can
say "punctuation marks".)

4.
We'll have our second dictation
today: Dictation #2: /ɪ/ vs. /i/,
with final /-d/.
Write the correct
spelling and IPA symbols for each word you hear.
All of the
words will have only one syllable, and all with end
with the /-d/ sound.
The vowel
will always be either /ɪ/
as in "did" /dɪd/ or /i/
as in "deed" /did/.
Some
items may start with a consonant cluster, e.g. creed /krid/.
Remember that the /k/
sound as in cat, kite, pick,
and choir
is
always written /k/ (never
/c/) in IPA.
The IPA for
the "sh" sound as in "ship" is /ʃ/. It's called either "esh"
or "long S".
Do NOT
use a small piece of paper! Paper is available
from the instructor.
You can
reuse the paper for future dictations if you like!
Use
ONLY x if an item is
wrong, NO CHECKS anywhere, no single or double
underlining.
Write
the percentage score in the upper right hand
corner as e.g. 80%.
The one
correcting the test should sign your name in the lower
right hand corner.
Remember to NOT "cross" your "i"s, "j"s
and "z"s in English!
Scores are in increments of 5% only, no partial credit
given.
5.
How are your transcriptions
going? Any problems or questions you'd like to discuss?
Here's the
new transcription assignment starting on 9/16/25:

Be ready
to mention some of the main points of the articles in class!
Note that
next Monday, September 29, and also October 6,
are both holidays and there will be no
class;
however,
you will still have the following articles assigned for these
two weeks:
For next
week, September 29, read and take notes on these two
articles:
CET 5: 英語教學死角:複合名詞重音
in No. 73, September/October 2012, p. 12-14;
we will
have quizzes on compound noun stress starting
Monday, October 13;
and: 「抓到了!母語人士動詞時態不一致!」(我
也 可以不用管動詞時態嗎?)
in
English Island 55 (30) June 2018.
This will
be keyed to the transcription exercise for September
24-26 (below).
Notes: a. Avoid
"widow lines", i.e. a single line at the bottom of the
page; move it to the next page.
b. Use single spacing in the name block in the upper
right hand corner of the page;
The date should be the date of the class when you took the
notes, and add
"Week One", "Week Three", and so forth. Please see format
instructions and model above.
c. Print on both sides of the paper.
d. Class Notes, NOT: Class
Note. (Question: How can we remember to be especially careful
of plurals in English? Include suggestions in your
notes!)
e. Start your notes below the name block.
f. Use ONLY a 12pt font size for English and Chinese;
DON'T use a larger font for headers.
g. Watch out for "smart quotes"! Also: "Teacher vs. Prof.
Chung"; and "sophomore".
h. It's hard to read
your content when you can't get past the formatting!
But when you can, good content with good formatting are a joy
to read!
(...and will probably get you good feedback – this goes into
your grade records.)
i. Comments, questions and feedback in your notes are highly welcome
and strongly encouraged!
Further notes, from Week Four:
a. Normally uncountable: vocabulary (say: vocabulary
words, new words, or just words)
"Feedback" is also uncountable – don't
add -s!
b. The
Productivity Project by Chris Bailey
video summary by Nathan Lozeron
"Find your
biological prime times, and do your most important work during
those windows."
"The most
productive people rearrange their day around
when they have
the most energy to work smarter, instead of harder."
"By working
in your prime-time window, you can work less, and get more done,
which means
you'll have more time to spend with the people you love." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUabJO4UAso&ab_channel=ProductivityGame
4. Dictation #3: /æ/ vs. /ɛ/,
with final /-k/. (POSTPONED
till October 7)
Write the
correct spelling and IPA symbols for each word you hear.
All of
the words will have only one syllable, and all with end with the
/k/ sound.
The vowel
will always be either /æ/ as
in "pack" /pæk/ or /ɛ/ as in "peck" /pɛk/.
Remember,
the "k" as in "kite", "c" as in "can",
"ck" as in "pack", "ch" as in "choir"
sound is always
written as /k/ in IPA!
Also note
that the "sh" sound as in "ship"
is
written in IPA as /ʃ/, and
is called "esh" or "long s".
Remember
to mark an "X" by wrong
answers, NOT a circle, check, cross-out, or other mark!
(The
instructor will make a check mark at the top to show it's been
viewed and corrected.)
And no
underlines or double underlines; don't write 75/100, but 75%!
(Also note that
syllable-initial "sb-", "sd-" and "sg-"
are impossible
in English!)

Here's the new transcription assignment starting on 9/24/25:
Betty in the Sky with
a Suitcase: #128 2016 Yellow
Horses http://betty.libsyn.com/
Week Five: September 29 and Week
Six: October 6: Holidays – no
class.
However, do note the
following:
1.
Please note the new transcription exercise above.
2.
I've had a look at your Google Drive folders, and
noticed
some
issues that need correcting.
First,
please reread these
instructions on how to save files to your
Google
Drive folder (copied from Week One):
>>
5. Google Drive: ELP Fall 2025
Create a folder using your English
given and family name as the folder name
e.g. Iris Lin, Mark Huang,
under ELP Fall 2025 on Google Drive;
use your gmail address to join.
This is where you will upload your class
assignments.
Upload each
new assignment into an increasingly growing pdf
file;
the newest notes always go at the top
of your Word file;
then convert to pdf format before
printing out to
avoid encoding errors.
and upload to your Google Drive folder.
To save your transcriptions to Google Drive,
use *Google Documents* – not Word or pdf.
You should use one new Google Doc for each
new assignment, for example, Before Breakfast
gets one file, Kpop gets one file, and so forth,
making FOUR Google Doc files so far.
After each 30-second transcription, you need to
*Compare Documents*.
THEN, make a LIST of all your errors BELOW the
transcription.
This is to help you identify what you need to watch
out for in the future.
Some of you haven't yet uploaded your transcriptions
to your Google Docs file at all –
make sure to do this as soon as possible!
Just doing the transcription in the Google Form
isn't enough!
Again, make sure this is all done before Friday,
October 17.
A full check of your Google Drive files will be made
after this time.
For the transcriptions, please keep each day of each
transcription assignment
in the SAME file. Start a new file when there is a
NEW transcription exercise.
Also, a reminder:
For Monday, September 29, read and take
notes on these two articles:
CET 5: 英語教學死
角:複合名詞重音 in No. 73, September/October
2012, p. 12-14;
we will have quizzes on compound noun
stress starting Monday, October 13;
and: 「抓到了!母
語人士動詞時態不一致!」(我 也 可以不用管動詞時態嗎?)
in English Island 55 (30) June 2018.
This is keyed to the transcription exercise
for September 24-26 (above).
1. First, remember to check
your NTU email account at least once a day, preferably twice a day!
There may be an
important email from this class!
Second, I've had a
look at your Google Drive folders, and
noticed
some issues that need correcting.
Please reread these
instructions on how to save files to
your
Google Drive folder (copied from Week One):
>>
5.

under ELP Fall 2025 on Google
Drive; use your gmail
address to join.
This is where you will upload
your class assignments.
Upload each new
assignment into an increasingly
growing pdf file;
the newest notes always go at
the top of your Word file;
then convert to pdf format
before printing out to avoid
encoding errors.
and upload to your Google Drive
folder.
To save your transcriptions to
Google Drive, use *Google Documents* –
not Word or pdf.
You should use one new Google Doc
for each new assignment, for example,
Before Breakfast
gets one file, Kpop gets one file, and
so forth, making FOUR Google
Doc files so far.
After each 30-second transcription,
you need to *Compare Documents*.
THEN, make a LIST of all your errors
BELOW the transcription.
This is to help you identify what you
need to watch out for in the future.
Some of you haven't yet uploaded your
transcriptions to your Google Docs
file at all –
make sure to do this as soon as
possible!
Just doing the transcription in the
Google Form isn't enough!
Again, make sure this is all done
before Friday, October 17.
A full check of your Google Drive
files will be made at this time.
For the transcriptions, please keep
each day of each transcription
assignment
in the SAME file. Start a new file
when there is a NEW transcription
exercise.

Discuss and hand in notes on these articles:
CET 5: 英語教學死角:複
合名詞重音 in No. 73,
September/October 2012, p. 12-14;
we will have quizzes on compound
noun stress starting Monday,
October 13;
and: 「抓到了!母語人
士動詞時態不一致!」(我 也 可以不用管動詞時態嗎?)
in English Island 55 (30) June 2018.
This is keyed to the transcription
exercise for September 24-26
(above).
New assignment:
For October 13: Read and take notes on these
two articles: a. CET 7: Stop at
stops! —— 遇到塞音請停! in No. 75,
January/February 2013, p. 12-14; and b. English Island 60 (34): 連音塞音
篇:STOP at STOPS! 遇到塞音請暫停! 2018-11
c. Please also watch this related video
(and find a minor typo in it!), labeled EI1-12&1-13,
available in the English Island articles
subfolder in the class Google Drive folder.
Be ready to mention at least three of the main
points of the articles and video in class next
Monday, October 20!
3. Compound Noun Stress quiz #1
We will
now practice applying some of the rules we've learned in:
CET 5: 英語教學死角:複合名詞重音
Circle
all the stressed syllables, and add an asterisk *
before the tonic stress in each item
as shown
in the examples that will be given on the board.
4.Dictation #4: /i/ vs. /ɪ/
vs. /ɛ/
vs. /æ/,
all with final /-p/.
Write the
correct spelling and IPA symbols for each word you hear.
All of the
words will have only one syllable, and all with end
with the /-p/ sound.
The vowel
will always be either:
/i/ as in "beat" /bit/ or
/ɪ/ as in "bit" /bɪt/
or
/ɛ/ as in "bet" /bɛt/ or
/æ/ as in "bat" /bæt/.
Remember, the "k"
as in "kite", "c" as in "can", "ck" as in "pack", and "ch" as
in "choir" sound is
always written as
/k/ in IPA!
Also remember
that the "sh" sound as in "ship"
is
written in IPA as /ʃ/, and
is called "esh" or "long s".
This page
has information on people and events mentioned in "We Pray",
and can help you
understand the song better. (It's worth reading!)
Week Eight: October 20:

talk on intonation and information
value
given in Chinese by
Prof. Chung for the May 14, 2022 Linguistics
Salon
held by LST (The Linguistic Society of Taiwan
台灣語言學學會) and NTNU
online:
Please share and discuss at least three
of the main points of the articles and
video.
3.
Please watch this video:
You need to find your motivation, to
clearly and concretely define your goal,
and make sure it is sustainable, so
you actually look forward to working
on it every day! Extrinsic motivation cannot compare
with your own intrinsic motivation
to get things done.
You need to be excited about doing
the task!
Even more important than the assignment
itself is training yourself to maintain a key
daily habit!
Cultivate: laser focus, getting in
the zone, the flow state!
Additional assignment: How do you pronounce
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi? Don't be scared off by it and give
up!
How did you get the answer to this? Practice
until you can
say it fluently, without hesitation
for next week's class.
4.
Dictation #5: /u/ vs. /ʊ/; all
items will end with /-d/;
some items will be in the past tense!
Write the correct spelling and IPA
symbols for each word you hear.
All of the words will have only one
syllable.
Examples: sued
/sud/
who'd /hud/
good /gʊd/
wood/would /wʊd/
Remember, the "k" as
in "kite", "c" as in "can",
"ck" as in "pack", and "ch"
as in "choir" sound is
always written as /k/
in IPA!
Also remember that the "sh" sound
as in "ship"
is written in IPA as /ʃ/, and is
called "esh" or "long s";
also that the "y" sound as in "yes"
is represented as /j/
in IPA, e.g./jɛs/!
5. Compound Noun Stress
Quiz #4: How to stress a noun
phrase
composed of a hyphenated
compound adjective + noun.
Remember to include your English
given name and family
name, e.g. Iris Lin,
and your student number, on
all homework, quizzes and
dictations!
• If you didn't include
notes on: 重
音與語調: 英語中的平行宇宙
The parallel
universe of
English stress
and intonation
last week or
this week,
make SURE to
include
them in next week's notes!
• If you
are missing any back
homework, make sure to make
it up
and hand it in asap: Renee, Jerome, Alannah, Mina
•Google
Drive: The following students
should check
your NTU email and upload
all missing files in the correct

•
Discuss Compound
Noun Stress quiz #4: What is a syllable?
How do we hear which syllable has stress?
How do we mark a stressed syllable correctly?
What do you need to make sure and avoid when
marking stress?
•
Also: DON'T
use check marks or make other marks when
marking dictations and quizzes.
•
Discuss the articles
assigned for this week: a.
CET 11 (issue 79): 台
式英語罪魁禍首:/æ /、/ɛ/ 和 /eɪ/ in
No. 79, September/October
2013, p. 12-14. b.
English Island 36 (11): 看
「中文字幕」會影響英文聽力嗎?
2016-11;
For our next class on
November 17, read and take
notes on these two
articles:
a.
CET 12 (issue 80): 英
語發音百樂篇(一): Pronunciation
Potluck (1) in
No. 80, November/December
2013, p. 12-14; and

2017-12;
also, the video on
vowels that
accompanies this article (1-4
用注音連英文母音),
available in the Google
Drive folder.
Pay special attention to:
/u/
vs. /ʊ/
vs. /ʌ/
vs. /ə/,
and the six diphthongs
雙母音:
/aɪ/
/eɪ/
/aʊ/
/oʊ/
/ɔɪ/
and /ju/
Song for practice:
My dame has a lametamecrane,
My dame has a crane
that is lame.
Please, gentle Jane,
let my dame's lame tame
crane
Feed and come home again.
3.
Dictation #6:
voiceless final stops
vs. voiced final stops
Write the correct spelling
and IPA symbols for
each word you hear.
All of the words will have
only one syllable,
The vowel will
always be /ɑ/,
as in "father"
/ˈfɑðɚ/,
"stop" /stɑp/;
and all will end
with either a voiceless
/t/
or a voiced /d/
sound,
for example, "plot"
/plɑt/,
vs. "plod" /plɑd/,
"tot"
/tɑt/,
vs. "Todd" /tɑd/.
The
IPA symbol for the "j"
sound as in "jam"
is /ʤ/.
Remember, the "k" as
in "kite", "c"
as in "can", "ck"
as in "pack", and "ch"
as in "choir" sound
is
always written as /k/
in IPA!
Also remember that the "sh"
sound as in "ship"
is written in IPA as /ʃ/,
and is called "esh" or "long
s".
4.
Compound
noun stress quiz #5:
with modifiers ending in -ing: gerunds
(nouns) vs. participles
(adjectives)
participles 分詞
function as adjectives:
"a B that is Aing"
or 「正在 A 的 B」,
e.g. "aching heart" is "a
heart that is aching").
Because it is adjective +
*noun,
both words are stressed: ACHing
*HEART.
More examples of a participle
現在分詞 ending with -ing
+ noun, forming a noun
phrase,
e.g.: a. WORKing
pro*FEssionals;
b. CHAllenging *TASK;
c. LEAding *LAW
firm
(noun phrase containing a
compound noun);
gerunds 動名詞 function
as nouns: "a B
for A" or 「用來做 A
的 B」,
e.g. "hiking boots" are
"boots for hiking"). Because
it is *noun + noun,
the modified word is not
stressed: *HIking
boots.
More
examples of a gerund
動名詞 ending with -ing
+ noun forming a compound
noun,
e.g. d. *PLAYing
cards; e. *STRETCHing
exercises; *CAMPing
gear (uncountable!)

next Monday,
December 1. We'll go over a few in class
to show how it's
done.
5.
Preparation for Final Exam on December 22:
Two essay questions to start thinking
about for the final exam:
1. Discuss "transfer" in foreign
language learning, that is,
how can you effectively and efficiently start consistently
applying
the theory and other things you learn in
class
to actual everyday English listening and
speaking?
2. How can you motivate yourself to
successfully establish a daily habit
of language practice, including daily
transcriptions and/or Echo practice?
Week Fourteen: December 1: 1. • Thanks
to everybody who included FEEDBACK
in this week's notes
(remember
that "feedback" is uncountable
– no -s!) –
I
enjoyed reading all of it! (You'll get extra credit for it!)
• The final exam will be held on Monday, December 22, 2025
at the
regular class time and place, i.e. 3:30pm in 共同 302.
• End-of-semester highlights and
evaluations.
Due Thursday, December 25. Prepare
in two separate pdf files:
(I)
20 of the most important things ("highlights") you learned
this semester, and:
(II) End-of-semester
evaluation:
Part 1: Evaluate
the class, materials, teacher, syllabus, homework assignments,
what was
most and least useful, things that could be
improved, and how
—
everything about the class this semester.
Part 2: Evaluate
yourself: Attendance and punctuality, homework
submission, how
much you learned from the class, how much effort
you put into this class,
Part 3: How
do you plan to continue improving your English in
general and
your
English listening and pronunciation skills in
particular?
Format
and submission instructions: Convert your files to pdf
format
before emailing
both pdf files to Prof. Chung at: feathermountain@gmail.com
Also,
make sure ALL your work has been uploaded
to your Google
Drive folder in the correct format!
For our next class on December 2, read and take
notes on the following articles: a.
CET 16 (issue 84): Do
not 和 don’t意思一樣嗎?英語的縮讀字(上) in No.
84, July/August 2014, p. 12-14; and

to all the tonic stresses,
for all the items in this handout. We'll
go over and correct some of them in class
today.
Bring
this handout with you to class next
week and the following week!
