          Indent five spaces at the beginning of each new paragraph,
          and leave only one blank line between paragraphs, not two!

     7. Learning partners:

         Each student will have a LEARNING PARTNER who you will sit next to every class.
         You will help each other with class work and accountability.
         You will also check on each other's online assignments. Deadline: Monday, September 8.

     8.
We'll have our first dictation next Monday, September 8
         Dictation #1: /ɪ
/ vs. /i/, with final /-k/.
         Write the correct spelling and IPA symbols for each word you hear.
         All of the words will have only one syllable, and all with end with the /-k/ sound.
         The vowel will always be either
/ɪ/ as in "pick" or /i/ as in "peek".

         You can get some practice with /i/ vs. /ɪ/ here:
              a. efl net: Sound contrasts:  https://eflnet.com/content/sound-contrast-i-vs-i
              b. Dictation Practice:  http://homepage.ntu.edu.tw/~karchung/phonetics/dictations.htm

         Also, print out the above IPA symbols handout, and bring it to every class.

         This site is useful for inputting IPA symbols online and into Word and other documents:

         Two useful sites:
         1. i2Speak IPA input tool:
         http://www.i2speak.com/

         2. Seeing Speech:
         Hear what each IPA symbol sounds like here
         while also seeing an animation, fMRI and ultrasound video of
         each sound actually being pronounced!
         https://www.seeingspeech.ac.uk/ipa-charts/

     9.  1. We'll be doing daily transcriptions! Here's a sample episode of the podcast we'll
              transcribe an episode of starting next Monday: Before Breakfast with Laura Vanderkam.
              Please listen to it to till you understand almost everything
              to get used to the format, language and content.

          2. For easy transcription: oTranscribe. We'll also be using Google Forms
              and Google Docs for this assignment.

          3. When in doubt about a pronunciation or meaning, go to the:
              Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

          4. To hear pronunciations of words or phrases in context,

          5. For personal and place names, titles, and other unfamiliar proper nouns and words,
              type out the sounds as best you can into Google.
              If you're even a little bit close, Google will usually correct your spelling
              and give you some information on what you're looking for.

          6. If you find the AI summary at the top of your Google results annoying
              and/or if it keeps crashing the page (as it often does for me),

          Please correct any incorrect information, add any missing information,
          and in addition, fill in the Chinese and English name of your Learning Partner.
          It's best if old students match with a new student where possible.
          Old students: Please help the new students catch up!

          use your gmail address to join; you should have received an invite by now;
          if not, email the professor right away.
          This is where you will upload your class assignments.

          Upload each new assignment into an increasingly growing pdf file;
          the newest notes always go at the top of your Word file; then convert to pdf
          and upload to your Google Drive folder.

          Create subfolders for:
          1. Class notes (not: "Class note"!);

      7.  Discuss and hand in:
           a. CET 1 & 2: 大師開講 — 提升聽力祕訣:每天請聽 「回音」十分鐘(上、下)  in No. 69 & 70,
          January/February p. 8-10 & March/April 2012, p.12-14.
           b. 英文 E-mail 潛規則:老師怎麼不早點教我?!

          For next week, September 16, read and take notes on these two articles:
          CET 3: /i/ 和 /ɪ/ 的辨別 in No. 71, May/June 2012, p. 12-14; and
         「格式」就是禮貌:英文標點符號的10大規 則 in English Island 英語島 48, January 2020.
          Be ready to mention some of the main points of the articles in class!

          Note: Do NOT "cross" your "i"s, "j"s and "z"s in English!
          Also, "second grade" means 「小二」! It should be "eleventh grade" (for senior high school).
          And the abbreviation for "Professor" is "Prof." – not "Pro."
          Staple at a slant in the upper left hand corner of the paper.

     8.  We'll have our first dictation today:
          Dictation #1: /ɪ/ vs. /i/, with final /-t/.
          Write the correct spelling and IPA symbols for each word you hear.
          All of the words will have only one syllable, and all with end with the /t/ sound.
          The vowel will always be either /ɪ/ as in "pit" or /i/ as in "Pete".

          For dictationslisten closely to all instructions!

          1. Use a full-sized sheet of paper; do not use a half-sheet or other small size of paper;
              you can reuse the same paper for future dictations. The instructor has paper if needed.
          2. When using loose-leaf notebook paper, start on the front of the paper, i.e. the holes go to the left.
          3. Write out your full English name, with family name, e.g. Sarah Chou, not just Sarah.
          4. Write the score like this: 80%, not 75 + 5 and not 80/100.
          5. Do not write any check marks anywhere on the test paper.
              If an item is wrong, mark it with an "x"; if it's correct, make no mark by it,
              and do not mark a big check mark over the whole test to indicate "no mistakes";
              just write 100% in the upper right hand corner of the paper;
              do not underline or double underline it or draw circles.
          6. When you mark a paper, sign your name in the lower right hand corner of the paper.

         Also, print out the above IPA symbols handout, and bring it to every class.

          Then paste first the "Before" version and "After" versions
          for each daily segment into separate Google docs in your Google Drive folder.
          Use the Google DocToolsCompare documents function
          to compare and display the differences between the two documents.
          Make a cumulative list of your errors so you know where you need work,
          and also to chart your progress.

          We'll go over some of the main points of the articles in class.

          For next week, September 22, read and take notes on these two articles:
          CET 4:「重音」真 的很重要! in No. 72, July/August 2012, p. 12-14; and

          Some items may start with a consonant cluster, e.g. creed /krid/.
          Remember that the /k/ sound as in cat, kite, pick, and choir
          is always written /k/ (never /c/) in IPA.
          The IPA for the "sh" sound as in "ship" is /ʃ/. It's called either "esh" or "long S".

     5.  How are your transcriptions going? Any problems or questions you'd like to discuss?
          Here's the new transcription assignment starting on 9/16/25:

          Daily 30-second transcription exercise
          Transcribe each daily segment with oTranscribe;
          then paste your transcription into the following Google Forms
          for 9/16 - 9/23, 2025 (8 segments/days).

          Then paste first the "Before" version and "After" versions
          for each daily segment into separate Google docs in your Google Drive folder.
          Use the Google Doc → Tools → Compare documents function
          to compare and display the differences between the two documents.
          Make a cumulative list of your errors so you know where you need work,
          and also to chart your progress.

          Note that all work for the course must be completed
          and submitted in order to receive a grade for this course.

                If you find the AI summary at the top of your Google results annoying
                and/or if it keeps crashing the page (as it often does for me on an iPad),
                use this URL for Google without AI:

                      b. Use single spacing in the name block in the upper right hand corner of the page;
                          The date should be the date of the class when you took the notes, and add
                          "Week One", "Week Three", and so forth. Please see format instructions and model above.
                      c. Print on both sides of the paper.
                      d. Class Notes, NOT: Class Note. (Question: How can we remember to be especially careful

                      f. Use ONLY a 12pt font size for English and Chinese; DON'T use a larger font for headers.

          The vowel will always be either /æ/ as in "pack" /pæk/ or /ɛ/ as in "peck" /pɛk/.
          Remember, the "k" as in "kite", "c" as in "can", "ck" as in "pack", "ch" as in "choir" sound is
          always written as /k/ in IPA!
          Also note that the "sh" sound as in "ship"
          is written in IPA as /ʃ/, and is called "esh" or "long s".

          Remember to mark an "X" by wrong answers, NOT a circle, check, cross-out, or other mark!
          (The instructor will make a check mark at the top to show it's been viewed and corrected.)
          And no underlines or double underlines; don't write 75/100, but 75%!

     6.  Song of the week: It's My Life     Bon Jovi      lyrics

          Week Five: September 29 and Week Six: October 6: Holidays – no class.
          However, do note the following:

      1. Please note the new transcription exercise above.

      2. I've had a look at your Google Drive folders, and noticed
          some issues that need correcting.

          First, please reread these instructions on how to save files to your
          Google Drive folder (copied from Week One):

>>      5.  Google Drive: ELP Fall 2025
          Create a folder using your English given and family name as the folder name
          e.g. Iris Lin, Mark Huang,
          under ELP Fall 2025 on Google Drive; use your gmail address to join.
          This is where you will upload your class assignments.
          Upload each new assignment into an increasingly growing pdf file;
          the newest notes always go at the top of your Word file;
          then convert to pdf
format before printing out to avoid encoding errors.
          and upload to your Google Drive folder.

>>      Create subfolders for:
          1. Class notes (not: "Class note"!!!); and
          2. Transcriptions.

          To save your transcriptions to Google Drive, use *Google Documents* – not Word or pdf.
          You should use one new Google Doc for each new assignment, for example, Before Breakfast
          gets one file, Kpop gets one file, and so forth, making FOUR Google Doc files so far.

          After each 30-second transcription, you need to *Compare Documents*.
          THEN, make a LIST of all your errors BELOW the transcription.
          This is to help you identify what you need to watch out for in the future.

          Some of you haven't yet uploaded your transcriptions to your Google Docs file at all –
          make sure to do this as soon as possible!
          Just doing the transcription in the Google Form isn't enough!

          Again, make sure this is all done before Friday, October 17.
          A full check of your Google Drive files will be made after this time.
          For the transcriptions, please keep each day of each transcription assignment
          in the SAME file. Start a new file when there is a NEW transcription exercise.

          Also, a reminder:

          For Monday, September 29, read and take notes on these two articles:
          CET 5: 英語教學死 角:複合名詞重音 in No. 73, September/October 2012, p. 12-14;
          we will have quizzes on compound noun stress starting Monday, October 13;
          and:
         「抓到了!母 語人士動詞時態不一致!」(我 也 可以不用管動詞時態嗎?)
          in English Island 55 (30) June 2018.
          This is keyed to the transcription exercise for September 24-26 (above).

          For October 6: CET 6: 抑揚頓 挫: 英語的語調和斷句 in No. 74, November/December 2012, p. 12-14; and

          Week Seven: October 13:

    1.   First, remember to check your NTU email account at least
          once a day, preferably twice a day! There may be an
          important email from this class!

          Second,

     2.  Compound noun stress quiz #2

          Notes:
          1. You will always need to circle a syllable
          in the first content word of a compound noun!

          so a score of 5 points is not possible.
          3. If you happen to miss a class, use the NTU Cool class video
          to make up any dictations or quizzes. Pause the video,
          then check your own answers and calculate your score.
          Hand in the marked quiz or dictation with next week's notes.

              (Hint: Use the NOUN form, not the ADJECTIVE!)

     3.  Please watch this video:
          You need to find your motivation, to clearly and concretely define your goal,
          and make sure it is sustainable, so you actually look forward to working on it every day!
          Extrinsic motivation cannot compare with your own intrinsic motivation to get things done.
          You need to be excited about doing the task!
          Even more important than the assignment itself is training yourself to maintain a key daily habit!
          Cultivate: laser focus, getting in the zone, the flow state!

          The 4 Fs of Flow | FLOW by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXD8QjpQrFc&ab_channel=ProductivityGame

          Additional assignment: How do you pronounce
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi?
          Don't be scared off by it and give up!
          How did you get the answer to this? Practice until you can
          say it fluently, without hesitation for next week's class.

          Examples: sued /sud/    who'd /hud/    good /gʊd/   wood/would /wʊd/

          Remember, the "k" as in "kite", "c" as in "can", "ck" as in "pack", and "ch" as in "choir" sound is
          always written as /k/ in IPA!

          Also remember that the "sh" sound as in "ship"

          also that the "y" sound as in "yes" is represented as /j/ in IPA, e.g./jɛs/!
