Spring
2020: There will be 31 class meetings
this semester:
March:
2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25, 30
April:
1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29
May:
4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27
June:
1,
3, 8, 10, 15
Note that we WILL have class
on the first day of finals
week, i.e. Monday, June 15,
2010;
this
way there will only be two
fewer classes than last year,
so the class will conclude
according to the original
pre-coronavirus schedule, and
won't extend into summer
vacation.
Tentative final
exam date:
Wednesday, June 17,
2020 外教中心 101;
subject to change.
Notes: 1. You will have an assigned seat to facilitate easier and
fairer turn-taking.
2. The polite way to address your professor is "Professor
Chung".
(This article explains current practices in
the US.)
If other teachers invite you to use their first name, then it's
OK; otherwise use "Professor" + family name.
3. ALWAYS use your NTU email account
for class-related correspondence unless otherwise instructed.
You will also need a gmail account to use Google Drive, and to
submit certain assignments, as instructed.
4. Always TURN OFF OR MUTE YOUR CELL
PHONE while in class.
5. ABSOLUTELY NO
EATING IN THE 外教 CLASSROOM! ALSO,
NO DRINKS ALLOWED OTHER
THAN PLAIN WATER OR UNSWEETENED TEA! You may
eat and drink in the hallways.
There will in any case be NO EATING
during class in both classrooms.
6. Use correct format in all your
written work:
Include your name
in English and Chinese,
your student number, and the
date, flush left (left justified),
in the upper right-hand corner
of all your work.
Use Times New Roman 12 pt for text,
新細明體 12 pt. for Chinese,
and Lucida Sans Unicode 10.5 pt for IPA symbols.
Sample:
Iris Lin 林玉梅
B01102000
Freshman English
September 10 & 12, 2018
Week One
Make SURE you include the CORRECT WEEK NUMBER for the classes
the notes are from, based on this
syllabus.
Grade calculation
Grades will be calculated on the
basis of:
Written class work (20%)
oral class work and class
participation (20%)
scores on your dictations and quizzes (15%)
score on final exam (written and
listening) (30%)
attendance,
punctuality, attitude, and progress made; DON'T BE LATE! (15%)
Note that the percentage breakdown is
only APPROXIMATE, and is SUBJECT TO ADJUSTMENT in each
individual case.
Extra credit will be given to students who do independent
research on a class-related topic and share their findings
with the class.
Also note that more than 3
absences or 5 tardinesses may result in your NOT PASSING THE
COURSE.
If you must miss class or be late let
Ms. Chung and the TA know by e-mail or otherwise beforehand;
or as soon as possible afterwards if
you really can't get in touch beforehand.
Don't just fail to show up for class
and not offer an explanation – even if it's "I overslept",
please explain.
WEEK ONE: 3/02, 3/04
3/02
1. Welcome
back!
Introductions: Prof. Chung and TA
Evanna Shih 施翌雯;
Enrollment and class list:
authorization codes for new students;
please fill in your Chinese and your
English or Romanized name,
along with your department, student
number, Facebook name, and gmail address.
Some of you are back from last
semester, but your original learning partner
may not be; in addition, we now have
some new students.
So we will start over and
choose a new learning partner for help and
accountability.
Please take the initiative and help the
new students in particular find a learning partner.
It may make things easier to stay in
touch if you're both in the same department.
Evanna will photograph the new students
during break for the class list.
Homework for
new students only:
Send an email to Prof. Chung
karchung@ntu.edu.tw and
TA Evanna Shih
施翌雯 b07102110@ntu.edu.tw.
Your email must be sent from
your ntu account, and must include:
1. this subject line:
fe: quote,
reason, NYT, gmail, fb name
2. an English quote you like,
together with its source.
Example: "We are cups,
constantly and quietly being filled.
The trick is,
knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff
out."
Ray Bradbury (1932- ),
American author
It must be a verifiable
quote, not a proverb, CORRECTLY FORMATTED,
containing no errors.
3. Your reason for wanting to take
this class: I want to take this class because...
4. Confirm that: I have subscribed to
the New York Times email newsletter
"Today's Headlines".
5. Give your gmail address, so you
can be added to Google Drive: My gmail address is:
6. Give your Facebook name: My
Facebook name is:
FORMAT is IMPORTANT!
See this sample, and read
Melissa Hsiung's article, 英文 E-mail 潛規則:老師怎麼不早點教我?!
for correct email format.
You will also need to
include notes on this article in next
Monday's homework.
Make sure to send
(almost) all emails in plain text, not html (look
under ... and click on: 切換為純文字).
Make sure
to produce careful work that is not filled with sloppy
mistakes:
GET EVERYTHING RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!
Make sure you sign your full name
(e.g. Iris Lin) to every e-mail you write!
Pay attention to correct format;
for example, leave a space before and
after (parentheses) like this.
Without a space it looks
like(this)and this is not acceptable in English written
format.
Every student must also register with
the New York Times
and subscribe to their daily email
newsletter (these are free,
as is access to up to five news
stories a month). You will be asked
to choose the kinds of news you'd
like to receive. The aim of this requirement
is to give you at least a passing
familiarity with current international events,
and for you to get used to using
English-language news media sources.
Include this sentence in your email:
"I have subscribed to the New York
Times email newsletter "Today's Headlines."
Do NOT subscribe to the NEWSPAPER,
and do NOT submit any financial information!
The New York Times (US):
Today's Headlines: https://www.nytimes.com/newsletters/todaysheadlines
Other email newsletters: https://www.nytimes.com/newsletters
The New York Times homepage: http://www.nytimes.com/
This assignment is due Monday, March 9.
2. Old students:
Your marked final exam and final set of notes will be
returned to you.
We will go over the answers for the final in
class. Here's the audio file for the "Shabbat"
transcription. Correct your
exam carefully on a separate sheet of paper, and submit
both the original exam and the
corrections on Wednesday, March 4.
3. We will continue
this semester to read CET and English Island articles;
new students will also need to
make up the articles we read last semester.
Please always be ready to help the new
students catch up on the
material from first semester!
Like last semester, every Monday you
will hand in your organized class notes
notes on the assigned articles, and
anything else assigned in class.
You need only note down things that are
new and/or important to you,
that you would like to remember for the
future.
Like last semester, you are to hand in
your paper notes on Monday and also upload them
in an increasingly growing pdf file
(newest notes on top of your Word file, then
convert to pdf) to your Google Drive
folder.
For
new students: Read and summarize:
CET 1 & 2: 大師開講 — 提升聽力祕訣:每天請聽「回音」十分鐘(上、下)
and 英文 E-mail
潛規則:老師怎麼不早點教我?!
For everybody: CET
19 脫口而出的英文文法 in No. 87,
January/February 2015, p. 8-10.
4. We will continue to read and translate an
assigned article, except this time we
will work to get through it much
more quickly and efficiently. Read and translate
mindfully. Remember to
apply the phrasing, stress, linking and other rules
we learned and practiced last
semester when reading aloud!
First article to
read and translate:
The Story of a Curious Phone Call
by Auburn Sandstrom Word
MP3 reading
Print out the article, prepare to read
and translate it, and bring the paper version
to every class – do not use
your phone or other device to read!
In addition to your assigned section,
make sure to read the whole story!
We'll have a vocabulary and compound
noun stress quiz after completing it.
Make sure to use the MP3 file to practice your
pronunciation, phrasing, and intonation,
and also to make the reading of the
whole article easier.
5. This semester, we
will have a daily passage in English to transcribe.
oTranscribe is a great online
transcription tool! Save both the before and
after versions of your
transcriptions in a Google Doc in your Google
Drive folder;
use the template is provided for you.
Please do one section a day rather than the whole
passage at once.
The reason: So you will get into the
habit of listening carefully and closely to a little
close English listening every day.
This will bring you many benefits in the long run, including
to
your study of other languages, and
your powers of observation even in your native
language(s).
Here are the 15 clips for the
coming two weeks. 1-14 are taken from the beginning of the
episode entitled "The Seven Minute Rule"
of author Michael Lewis's "Against the Rules" podcast.
The clip for each day is around
30 seconds or less, and each is marked by a number 1-14,
corresponding to the 14 days it
will take to complete the whole transcription.
The file for Day 15 is a
42-secord report from WNYC radio.
Play special attention to the
unclear function words. Also, what methods can
you use
to find out how to spell words
that are new for you, personal names, place
names,
what initialisms mean,
and proper nouns? (Start with
Google!)
How can repetition help
you catch words you may have missed the first time?
Use Google Images to
see what unfamiliar nouns look like, e.g. cinder block
walls.

6. This
semester we are also going to give a 6-minute oral book report
in pairs.
You will need to choose a simplified
English language novel; here and here are
some good examples. You will
need to find a partner, then together choose a
book to report on. It must be a simplified
version of an English-language novel
with literary value; but
no children's books, no Lord of the Rings,
no Harry Potter, no
Charlotte's Web, no Little Prince! Choose
a book at a level that is just a bit more
difficult than your current level of
English, i.e. neither too easy nor too hard.
Simplified English novels are available
at Bookman Books 書林, Crane's 文鶴,
Cave's 敦煌, and other English book
stores, and online. You need to get your choice
approved by Prof. Chung
beforehand.
The reports will be presented in early
May 2020.
7. This semester we
will also practice and perform a scene from the pilot episode of
Gilmore Girls. Please begin viewing the
episode, several times, for pleasure.
Try to understand a bit more each time
you watch it. You are welcome to refer to
the transcript for the episode, which
is available online.

1. Discussion of oral book report
assignment. NO POWERPOINTS ALLOWED!
Start reading your chosen book NOW if
you haven't already started.
Read it through once without checking
too many words – only look up a
word if it's interfering with your
basic understanding of the story and
enjoyment.
Read it a second time, this time noting
down the words you don't know,
and looking them up. Enter the new
words with their Chinese translations
in the "Vocabulary" sheet of your
Learning Checklist. Also take notes on
the story for your summary, noting what
parts impressed you most.
Then read a third time, trying to
understand and enjoy it thoroughly,
without being slowed down too much due
to words you don't understand.
After three readings, meet with your
report partner to discuss the book,
and how you plan to structure the
report and divide up the work.
Write a script for your presentation.
Email it to Prof. Chung and Evanna
by Wednesday,
April 8, 2020. We'll go over it and try to get it
back to you asap.
Once your script has been corrected,
start practicing your oral presentation
with your partner. Make a date with
Evanna for your 20-minute coaching session
outside of class.
Here is the revised schedule for the
oral book report presentations. You will need
to schedule your presentation with
Evanna beforehand – first come, first served!

More hints on the oral book report:
Presenters:
remember to:
(1) Always face the audience
and connect with them visually.
(2) Speak loud without
shouting and clearly. Use a microphone if
necessary. You wißll quickly
lose your audience if you speak too quietly
or in a monotone voice. But
don’t overdo the drama either!
(3) Use natural gestures to
support what you’re saying, but don’t overdo it.
Don’t
break character, and don’t make nervous
movements like
wiggling your leg, twisting
your hair, walking around on the platform
too much, or giggling
unnecessarily. Maintain the thread of what you
are saying, and try to engage
your audience.
Audience:
remember to:
(1) Stay quiet while others
are presenting!
(2) But do give them
feedback, e.g. laughter if appropriate, and applause
at the end. Pay close
attention, and give oral feedback at the end so
they know how they did, and
how they can improve next time.

homework
assignments,
what was most

useful, things
that could be
improved, and
how
— everything
about the

Part 2:
Evaluate
yourself:
Attendance and
punctuality,
homework
submission,
how much you
learned from
the class, how
much effort
you put into
this class,
Part 3:
How do you
plan to

notes that are
about the same
thing and to
generalize.

Grades will be calculated on the basis
of:
Written class work (20%)
oral class work and class participation
(20%)
scores on your dictations and quizzes (15%)
score on final exam (written and
listening) (30%)
attendance,
punctuality, attitude, and progress made; DON'T BE LATE!
Ms. Chung and the TA know by e-mail or otherwise beforehand;
or as soon as possible afterwards if
you really can't get in touch beforehand.
Don't just fail to show up for class

familiarity with current international events,
and for you to get used to using
English-language news media sources.
Include this sentence in your email:
"I have subscribed to the New York Times

Do NOT subscribe to the NEWSPAPER, and do

Prepare:
(I) a written evaluation of
this semester's class and
(II) an organized summary
of your class notes, in two separate pdf files:
I.
End-of-semester evaluation:
Part 1: evaluate the
class, materials, teacher, syllabus, homework
assignments,
what was most and least useful,
things that could be improved, and how
— everything about the class
this semester.
Part 2: Evaluate
yourself: Attendance and punctuality, homework
submission,
how much you learned from the
class, how much effort you put into this class,
Part 3: How do you plan
to continue improving your English in general and
your English listening and
pronunciation skills in particular?
II.
Organized summary of your class notes:
