Course description:

     This course is a continuation of Karen Chung's Introduction to Phonetics Course, though students who have taken
other introductory phonetics courses are also welcome.

     Our main foci this semester will be (
this list is not exhaustive):

     1. Mastery of the IPA, both for English and for other languages;
     2. English listening and transcription practice;
     3. Acoustic phonetics;
     4. Various skills covered in the CET and English Island articles.

     We will aim to cover the following four chapters in Wayland, including a review of the parts of ch. 2
     that we didn't cover in depth last semester. This is a tentative plan; get updated information in class
     and from this page as it becomes available:

     Chapter 6.   Basic Acoustics
     Chapter 2.   Airstream Mechanisms and Phonation Types
                         (we'll cover in more depth the parts we skimmed over last semester)
     Chapter 8.   Acoustic Properties of Vowels and Consonants
     Chapter 10. Speech Perception

     We will aim to read the textbook aloud for around 10 minutes each class, with each person taking one or a half
     paragraph or so, with the instructor explaining and clarifying the content as we go along. The instructor will then
     usually herself continue reading and summarizing parts of the text to save time and keep up with our proposed syllabus.

     We will also use this as an opportunity to correct each student's pronunciation problems, and you will take notes on the corrections
     you and others receive. This will help you become aware of which areas you need to work on in your own pronunciation.

     You are to organize and input your class notes and corrections into typed notes. If you like, you can use this "
pronplan" Excel file
     to keep organized record; it's also available in the class Google Drive folder.

     Students are expected to take careful class notes, including on pronunciation corrections,
     and will be asked to submit a paper summary of their notes in class every Monday, and to also
     upload your notes and other written work to Google Drive.

     Make sure Prof. Chung has a gmail address for you so you can be added to the Phonetics F19 & S20 folder
     on Google Drive.
You will edit your files every week, adding the new week's notes to the top of the Word file,
     pdf it, and upload it to your GD folder.

     General American (GA) will be our standard for this class, but we will make frequent reference to Standard Southern British
     (SSB) English, sometimes called "RP" ('received pronunciation'; also called 'BBC English' ¡V which by the way is now changing
     quite rapidly!) ¡V and other dialects of English. We'll also make frequent comparisons to Mandarin Chinese, Southern Min,
     Cantonese, and other dialects and languages as needed.

     You will be assigned various written exercises, some from the text, some in the form of online handouts. There will usually be
     at least one chapter test on each chapter of Wayland, to help consolidate the material we cover. And there will be a final exam
     at the end of the semester. There will also be dictations to help train your ears and sharpen your sensitivity to the sounds of language
     and quizzes, and to gain mastery of the IPA symbols used for English.

     There will be 31 class meetings this semester:

     March: 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25, 30
     April:   1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29
     May:    4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27
     June:   1, 3, 8, 10, 15

     Note that we WILL have class on the first day of finals week, i.e. Monday, June 15, 2010;
     this way there will only be two fewer classes than last year, so the class will conclude
     according to the original pre-coronavirus schedule, and won't extend into summer vacation.
     Tentative final exam date: Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at 5:30-7:15pm in ´¶ 202.

     There will be a number of class dictations, transcriptions, and practical exercises in
     English pronunciation will be assigned,
as time permits, with emphasis on consolidating
     past progress and identifying and fine-tuning areas left for improvement.
Various Web
     assignments will be given, and you will get more practice in using Praat and other speech tools.

     Make sure you join and check in often with NTU Phonetics on Facebook, where we can continue
     and supplement
class discussions and ask and answer questions online.

     Videos of all the classes from Phonetics II, Spring 2013, are available online for reference.
     This semester will be considerably different from previous years, since we're using a new textbook,
     but if you end up missing a class, or if you'd like to hear the material again for review or to understand
     it better, you're encouraged to watch the online lectures.

Grade calculation:

     The following is an approximate breakdown of how your semester grade will be calculated.
     Note this it is subject to adjustment in each individual case.

     Also note that more than 3 absences or 5 tardinesses may result in your NOT PASSING THE COURSE.

     All of your oral (including class participation) and written class work (25%);
     scores on your dictations (10%);
     scores on the chapter tests (20%);
     score on final exam (30%);
     attendance, punctuality, attitude, and progress made (15%).

              3. ALWAYS use your NTU email account for class-related correspondence unless otherwise instructed.
                  You will also need a gmail account to use Google Drive, and to submit certain assignments, as instructed.
                  The subject line should always begin with: phon

              4. Always TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE while in class.

Week 1: 3/02, 3/04
Monday 3/02:

(1)  Watch the tongue in action; from Tech Insider.

(2)  Enrollment and other class business;
      fill in your gmail and other required information:
      You will receive an invitation to join the class gmail folder
      if you weren't in the class last semester. Make sure you join!

      Phonetics II, page two.

      Make sure you have a copy of our textbook,
      Phonetics: A Practical Introduction
      by Ratree Wayland.

      You will choose a LEARNING PARTNER today and sit next to them every class;
      old students can either keep your learning partner from last semester if they're
      in the class, or choose a new one.

      Hint: Former students have a lot of useful experience and knowledge to share!
      You can choose a learning partner during break if you don't have someone in mind yet.
      Add your partner's name directly into the Spring 2020 class list (it's in a new sheet)
      in the class Google Drive folder.

Homework for new students only:
      Send Prof. Chung an email at karchung@ntu.edu.tw, including:
      1. your gmail address and your Facebook name;
      2. your reason for wanting to take this class;

      FORMAT is IMPORTANT!
      See this sample, and read Melissa Hsiung's article,
      ^¤å E-mail ¼ç³W«h¡G¦Ñ®v«ç»ò¤£¦ÂI±Ð§Ú?! for correct email format.
      Always start the subject line with: phon to show which class the email is for.

(3) Your final exam from last semester will be returned and we'll go over it in class.

Correct the exam carefully and hand it in on Wednesday March 4.

(4) Just like last semester, you will hand in the paper version
      of your class notes every Monday, and you are also to
      upload them to Google Drive before Monday of each week.
      Make sure that you record all pronunciation corrections, and
      work actively on automating them and thus fixing them permanently
      so we won't have to keep repeating the same corrections in class!
      One of the biggest complaints in previous classes is that we spent
      too much class time correcting the same mistakes over and over
      again. This can be avoided if you practice and come prepared.

(5) For new students: Read and summarize:
     CET 1 & 2:
¤j®v¶}Á¿ ¡X ´£¤ÉÅ¥¤O¯¦³Z¡G¨C¤Ñ½ÐÅ¥¡u¦^µ¡v¤Q¤ÀÄÁ¡]¤W¡B¤U¡^
     For everybody:
CET 19 ²æ¤f¦Ó¥Xªº^¤å¤åªk in No. 87, January/February 2015, p. 8-10.

(6) This semester, we will have a daily passage in English to transcribe. For now it will be
      enough to transcribe it into regular orthography (spelling); later we will also transcribe
      into IPA.

      oTranscribe is a great online transcription tool! Save both the before and after versions of
      your transcriptions in a Google Doc in your Google Drive folder.

      Please do one section a day rather than the whole passage at once.
      The reason: So you will get into the habit of listening carefully and closely to a little
      close English listening every day. This will bring you many benefits in the long run, including to
      your study of other languages, and your powers of observation even in your native language(s).

      Here are the 15 clips for the coming two weeks. 1-14 are taken from the beginning of the
      episode entitled "The Seven Minute Rule" of author Michael Lewis's "Against the Rules" podcast.
      The clip for each day is around 30 seconds or less, and each is marked by a number 1-14,
      corresponding to the 14 days it will take to complete the whole transcription.
      15 is a 42-secord report from WNYC radio.

      Play special attention to the unclear function words. Also, what methods can you use
      to find out how to spell words that are new for you, personal names, place names,
      what initialisms mean, and proper nouns?
(Start with Google!)
      How can repetition help you catch words you may have missed the first time?
      Use Google Images to see what unfamiliar nouns look like, e.g. cinder block walls.

      Bonus: Do you notice anything in Lewis' pronunciation that may hint at what part of the US
      he's from? It's very subtle, and even many native speakers may not notice it at all, but it's there!

      Here are direct inks to each daily segment:
     1.  3/02            8.   3/09
     2.  3/03            9.   3/10
     3.  3/04            10. 3/11

Due Friday, June 12: Prepare:
     (I) a written evaluation of this semester's class and
     (II) an organized summary of your class notes, in two separate pdf files:

     I. End-of-semester evaluation:
        Part 1: evaluate the class, materials, teacher, syllabus, homework assignments,
        what was most and least useful, things that could be improved, and how
        ¡X everything about the class this semester.
        Part 2: Evaluate yourself: Attendance and punctuality, homework submission,
        how much you learned from the class, how much effort you put into this class,
        Part 3: How do you plan to continue improving your English in general and
        your English listening and pronunciation skills in particular?

     II. Organized summary of your class notes:
         Go through all your old notes, and organize them into a summary of main points.
         You do not have to include every single detail from your notes; try rather to combine
          notes that are about the same thing and to generalize.

         Format and submission instructions: Convert your files to pdf format
         before emailing both files to Prof. Chung at: feathermountain@gmail.com
