Scope
Environmental Research Communications (ERC) is pleased to announce a new focus collection, aimed at bringing together high-quality rigorous original research led by early career researchers (e.g. PhD researchers, postdocs and early-career faculty) whose work focuses on these regions. At ERC we believe that it is vital to recognise and reward research excellence representing students and emerging leaders to help further the advancement of environmental science, for the benefit of all.
We welcome submissions from all domains of the Earth's system, including atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere as well as interdisciplinary studies between these. All environment-related research aimed at specific disciplines, and case studies are within scopes. In addition, approaches from a range of physical and natural sciences, economics, and political, sociological and legal studies are encouraged. All types of results can be published, provided they contribute to advancing knowledge in their field, including negative results, null results and replication studies. Specific topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Biogeochemical cycling including modelling
- Biodegradation and bioremediation
- Microbes in the era of Anthropocene
- Innovative solutions to a circular economy
- Green practices for realizing net-zero emissions
- Energy consumption
- Renewable energy (focus on biomass-based technologies)
- Sustainable water resource engineering / management
- Sustainable development
- Urban climate mitigation
- Climate change governance and policy
- Climate change and biodiversity
- Ecosystem services and biodiversity
- Coastal blue economy and policy
- Automated monitoring of environments and ecosystem restoration
- UN SDG goals and policy frameworks
The lead or corresponding author must be an early career researcher; currently studying an undergraduate or postgraduate course, or who has completed their PhD within the last 10 years.
A number of authors have been invited directly by the Guest Editors, however we welcome open call proposals and submissions from the community. Early career researchers who would like feedback on the suitability of an article in preparation prior to submission are encouraged to email an abstract or draft manuscript and cover letter to the journal publishing team or to one of the Guest Editors listed above.
Submission process
Focus issue articles must be of the same format and meet the same publication criteria as regular research articles in ERC. They are also subject to the same rigorous review process, and high editorial standards. Please read the journal scope page for more information before submitting.
For more comprehensive information on preparing your article for submission and the options for submitting your article, please see our author guidelines.
All articles should be submitted using our online submission form. In the 'Select Special Issue' drop down box please select 'Focus on Early Career Researchers: Environmental Science in South and South East Asia'.
Authors are required to submit a cover letter indicating their academic career stage, and whether they were invited to submit an article.
Deadline for submissions
Submissions will be accepted until 31 March 2022 however submissions earlier than this date are encouraged. ERC will publish this focus collection incrementally, adding new articles to this webpage as and when they are accepted for publication following peer review. Therefore, if you submit early in the period your article will not be held up waiting for other articles.

ERC is an open access journal, completely free to read, and is funded solely by article publication charges (APC). Authors should therefore be aware of the APCs for accepted and published articles, including those in focus collections. Full details about the article charge can be found on the publication charges page.
