NTU Graduate Program of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Program Regulations

1. The following regulations are established in accordance with the laws of the Ministry of Education and the relevant provisions of the National Taiwan University Graduate Program of Teaching Chinese as a Second language.
2. Period of Study: 2~4 years. Leave of absence: limited to 2 years only.
3. Credits Needed for Graduation

MA students of the Teaching of Chinese as a Second Language Program (referred to as TCSLP hereafter) must complete 30 credits of coursework and present a thesis in order to graduate. There are 4 main courses in this program, including: Compulsory Core Courses (12 credits), Chinese Linguistics (6 credits), External Chinese Language Teaching (9 credits), Chinese Society and Culture (3 credits), Teaching Internship (72 hours), MA Thesis (not included in credits).
4. Credit Transfer:

(i.) Students with a Masters degree from a Ministry of Education registered domestic or independent university, Academia Sinica, Ministry of Education approved overseas university or independent college, or who have completed graduate classes held by NTU’s School of Professional Continuing Studies with passing grades are eligible for credit transfer, after evaluation and approval by the program Course Committee. Any exceptions that are approved by the Dean of Academic Affairs will also be eligible for credit transfer. Students who have completed graduate classes elsewhere will only be eligible for credit transfer after their application has been evaluated and approved by the Course Committee.

(ii.) The standard passing grade for MA students is a B- (or a score of 70 out of 100).


(iii.) A maximum of 9 credits may be transferred, unless approved by the Dean of Academic Affairs or other regulations.
5. Provision of Internship

MA students of this program must complete a minimum of 72 hours of teaching internship at a domestic or foreign education institution, professional accreditation body or recognized school (including university affiliated language centers) at all levels before graduation. The native language of the learning students must not be Chinese.
6. Provision of Foreign Language Skills

MA students of this program should have a GEPT certificate of High-Intermediate Level or an English proficiency test of the same level that has been recognized by the Course Committee of the program.
7. Master’s Thesis

The thesis content of this program can be written in English or Chinese. Upon passing the thesis oral examination, the student should hand in a typed and bound copy of the thesis (refer to the school’s regulations) within the scheduled time.
8. VIII. Thesis Examination

The provisions of this program’s thesis examination is in accordance to the “National Taiwan University PhD and Masters Degree Examination Regulations.”
9. The main points of this program have been revised and passed by the program Course Committee after the date of promulgation.
