Phalaenopsis equestris
Distribution: Taiwan and Philippines
Flower size: 2 cm

About 50 species consitute the genus Phalaenopsis, but only two of them, P. amabilis and P. equestris could be found in Taiwan. Both are highly respected on hybrid values. Although it probably widely exist in Philippines, P. equestris is not actually native in main island of Taiwan, but could only be found, if there is still any left, in the tropical rainforest on Lan Tsu (Orchid Island), a small island off Taiwan's southeast coast. It is the parent of many minitural flower hybrids which become very popular in the recent years. its mall flower size, branching flower stalks, and long blooming period have given modern Phalaenopsis hybrids a new look.
