Spring 2017: Syllabus

    There will be 31 class meetings this semester:

     February 2017: 20, 22, 27 (Holiday; no class);
     March: 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29;
     April: 3 (Holiday; no class), 5 (Holiday; no class); 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26;

WEEK ONE
2/20

1. Welcome back!
    New students will be registered and assigned a partner from the old students
    to help you with questions about the class and previously taught material.
2. You'll receive your final exams back;
    we'll go over them in class. Correct them carefully
    and hand them in on Wednesday Feb. 22.
3. Like last semester, you will hand in a paper version of your weekly notes
    every Monday in class, and will also upload a pdf file of your notes to
    the class folder on Google Drive.
4. We have finished the CET articles, however, new students will be assigned
    one or two CET articles per week to learn what we covered last semester;
    for this week please read this article and include notes on it in your weekly
    class notes:

     Please ask for help from your old-student partner when needed!
     This semester we all will read the remaining English Island articles;
     like last semester, include notes on each assigned article in your weekly notes.
     The first article, due Wednesday 3/1 (2/27 is a holiday), is

5. We will continue our weekly vocabulary unit; Andrea will be in touch with you on this!
6. This semester we'll be watching an episode of The Big Bang Theory. We'll go over the script
    carefully, one scene at a time, then we'll perform scenes from the episode in small groups in class.
    Here is a Chrome extension called "Stream Series" that you can use to watch
    TV shows online relatively safely without ads:

7. Breaktime music: (Outlaws of Love 1979)    by Roger Hodgson of Supertramp     lyrics
    From Wikipedia: Roger Hodgson composed the song from an autobiographical point of view,
    from his experience of being sent away to boarding school for ten years.
    The lyrics are a condemnation of an education system focused on categorical jargon
    as opposed to knowledge and sensitivity. The lyrics are notable for their use of consonance,
    with a repetition of the '-ical/ -able' endings of multiple adjectives
