WEEK
ONE
2/20
1.
Welcome back!
New students will be registered and assigned a partner
from the old students
to help you with questions about the class and previously
taught material.
2. You'll receive your final
exams back;
we'll go over them in class. Correct
them carefully
and hand them in on Wednesday Feb. 22.
3. Like last semester, you will
hand in a paper version of your
weekly notes
every Monday in class, and will also upload a pdf file
of your notes to
the class folder on Google
Drive.
4. We have finished the CET articles,
however, new students will be
assigned
one or two CET articles
per week to learn what we covered last semester;
for this week please read this article and include notes
on it in your weekly
class notes:
大師開講
— 提升聽力祕訣:每天請聽「回音」十分鐘(上、下)
in No. 69 & 70, January/February p. 8-10 &
March/April 2012, p.12-14.
Please ask for help from your old-student partner
when needed!
This semester we all will read the remaining English
Island articles;
like last semester, include notes on each assigned
article in your weekly notes.
The first article, due Wednesday 3/1 (2/27
is a holiday), is
台灣教室裡找不到的「嘲諷課」(上).
5. We will continue our weekly
vocabulary unit; Andrea will
be in touch with you on this!
6. This semester we'll be watching
an episode of The Big Bang Theory.
We'll go over the script
carefully, one scene at a time, then we'll perform scenes
from the episode in small groups in class.
Here is a Chrome extension called "Stream
Series" that you can use to watch
TV shows online relatively safely without ads:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stream-series/cdagmkghogpcneieahjlcbnfipgeafch?hl=en
Do a search on Stream Series for The Big Bang Theory,
then choose Episode 7 of Season 3;
it's called "The Guitarist
Amplification".
The transcript
is here:
https://bigbangtrans.wordpress.com/series-3-episode-07-the-guitarist-amplification/
Here it is as a formatted
Word file. Please print it out, and bring it to each class.
Read it up to the line: "Would you like a commemorative
snow cone?"
Look up all the
words, phrases and cultural allusions you're not sure of.
Make sure each line makes sense! If it doesn't,
Google it - and if you're still
not sure ask in class.
Bring your questions to class on Wednesday 2/22.

The lyrics are a condemnation of an education system focused

for their use of consonance,
with a repetition of the '-ical/ -able' endings of multiple
adjectives.
