Contemporary
Studies on the Book of Changes and Interpretations of Class
The
course is designed for graduate students of the Department of Chinese
Literature. The total unit of study for the whole academic year is
6; the unit of study for each semester is 3. The content of the instruction
is based upon the instructor’s research results from the following
projects: ‘The Interpretation on “Yi Chin” by Contemporary Confucian
Scholars’ which is the sub-project of “The tradition of the interpretation
of the classics in the East Asian modern Confucianism” (this is also
a sub-project of ‘Plan of pursuing excellence of universities’ by
the Ministry of Education). The two fields in ‘Contemporary research
on “Yi Shueih” (the study of Yi Ching) of East Asia’ and ‘Studies
on the Interpretation of Classics’ will be the main pivot of the
instruction. There would be seven issues to be dealt with, they are
as follows:
1. The background, origin, and recent situation of the issues on the
interpretation of classics of contemporary East Asia.
2. The three categories and problem-consciousness regarding the interpretation
of classics.
3. The method and methodology of the interpretation of classics of East
Asia.
4. The relation among language, literature analysis and the interpretation
of classics of East Asia.
5. Contemporary research orientation of ‘Yi Shueih’ (study on Yi Ching)
of East Asia.
6. The interpretation of ‘Yi Shueih’ and the interpretation of "Yi
Tu Hsiang" (the image of Yi).
7. Related issues regarding the translation the annotation of ‘Yi Chin’
(‘the Book of Change") and theory on the interpretation of classics.
Students are required to submit a term paper for each semester; they
will give an oral presentation on the paper in the class, and to discuss
problems with the classmates.
The grading criteria is as follows:
1. The first draft of the paper: 30%
2. Discussion: 40%
3. Revision of the draft: 30%
