Studies on Bibliography

This is an elective course, it is provided for students working on their master or doctoral program. The length of the course is one semester.
The goal and purpose of this course is to lead students to understand the classification of ancient Chinese books, to understand the origin and development and whole story of the intellectual thought of each dynasty, to analyze the essential ideas and the merits and faults of certain books, and to distinguish the similarities and differences and the fit and unfit of the edition of each book ), in order to enable students to know the nature of the study through the knowledge on classification and to seek books through the understanding of the study on bibliography.
The content of instruction will be divided into two parts: the general introduction on bibliography and the origin and development of Chinese bibliography. The general introduction will be divided into four chapters. The first chapter is the interpretation of the term of bibliographical study. The second chapter is the discussion of the meaning of bibliographical study. The third chapter is to discuss the function of bibliographical study. And the fourth chapter is to understand the system of bibliographical study.
As to the second part: the origin and development of bibliography, we will assign the topic into eight chapters, they are as follows:
The first chapter: catalogues in the Chi-Rue (the seven categories) period (the Two-Han era)
The second chapter: catalogues in the Si-Bu (the four classifications) period (the Wei-Chin era)
The third chapter: catalogues during the competitive period from Chi-Lue to Si-Bu (the Nan-Pei Dynasty and the Suei Dynasty)
The forth chapter: catalogues in the period of the unification of Chi-Rue and Si-Bu (the Tang and the Five-Dynasty era)
The fifth and sixth chapters: catalogues in period of the reforming of the type of classification (the Sung, the Yuan and the Ming dynasties).
The seventh chapter: catalogues in the period of declining (the Ching Dynasty).
The eighth chapter: catalogues in the period with the importation of the western classification.

The grading criteria:
Students should compose several reading reports.
