NTU and MIT Explore Microfluidic Technologies to Advance Smart Healthcare and Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration

To strengthen international academic exchange and explore the applications of microfluidic technologies in smart healthcare and precision medicine, National Taiwan University (NTU) hosted a seminar and industry-academia networking event "Microfluidic Technologies for Immune Assessment and Personalized Medicine" on June 25. The event featured Professor Joel Voldman from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Professor Nien-Tsu Huang from NTU's Department of Electrical Engineering and Graduate Institute of Biomedical Electronics and Bioinformatics. Faculty members from related disciplines and industry experts were also invited to participate in the discussions. In his welcoming remarks, Professor Tsung-Lin Yang, Deputy Vice President for Research and Development at NTU, stated, "We hope everyone will actively participate in today's event, contribute valuable insights from diverse perspectives, and together explore new possibilities that enrich academic research and create future opportunities for collaboration."

 

Professor Voldman opened the seminar by presenting his latest research on microfluidic electronic tools. He introduced innovative approaches that combine cell pairing, electrical cell sorting, and electrochemical microfluidic systems to precisely analyze immune cell functions and protein biomarkers. He also discussed the potential applications of these technologies in disease diagnosis, immune monitoring, and clinical testing, while sharing both the current challenges and future directions of microfluidic research. Professor Huang then introduced NTU's recent advances in developing multifunctional microfluidic platforms for personalized medicine and healthcare. By integrating multiple sensing and microfluidic technologies, these platforms significantly improve analytical efficiency and accuracy, demonstrating NTU's research strengths in precision medicine, biomedical chips, and smart healthcare. Throughout the seminar, the two professors exchanged research experiences and technical perspectives, learning from each other's expertise while engaging with faculty members, students, and industry representatives in discussions on potential future collaborations.

 

Following the seminar, Professor Huang and Associate Professor Ya-Yu Chiang from NTU's Department of Mechanical Engineering guided Professor Voldman on a campus tour. They first visited the NTU Museum of Engineering, housed in the former Mechanical Engineering Building, where Professor Voldman learned about the department's historical inventions and engineering achievements. The visit continued with tours of Associate Professor Chiang's and Professor Huang's laboratories. Students took the opportunity to present their research projects and experimental work, receiving valuable feedback and suggestions from Professor Voldman. During the evening networking dinner, Professor Voldman and several NTU faculty members further exchanged views on topics including the current research ecosystem, international collaboration models, and future partnership opportunities. The event not only showcased NTU's commitment to expanding global academic collaborations but also strengthened ties with one of the world's leading universities, creating new opportunities for international cooperation in biomedical technology and smart healthcare innovation.
