This talk introduces select material from the Wang Family Cemetery in Gansu Province. An Önggüt general serving the Jin dynasty, Wang Shixian was the last Jin general to surrender to the Mongols in 1235. Wang went on to serve in the Mongol military with honor. After his death in 1243, Wang was granted the title of Prince of Longyou, an area around present-day Zhang County in southern Gansu, where the family cemetery is now located. The materials from the Yuan period tombs are of particular interest for both their quantity and quality. This material reveals the complex identities held by these local elites in the Yuan dynasty, who drew from Buddhist, Daoist, Confucian, Mongol, and North Chinese cultural practices. This talk will focus on a handful of the Yuan era tombs that have good evidence for female tomb occupants to demonstrate how object-based analysis can shed light on identity formation amongst women elites in local contexts during the Mongol period.
