(7)Previous Problems & Solutions
For a long time, NTU's old dorms have lacked necessary
facilities and were much criticized. The 9,000 or more
students residing in the dorms have made dorm improvements an
important goal for the Student Housing Services Department.
|
OLD DORMS Solutions: |
- To convert eight-person rooms to six-person rooms
- To increase electric power and repair phone lines
in old dorms
- To add new desks, chairs, and beds
- To install new elevators
- To repair roofs, install new water pipelines, and
provide drinking water to various dorms
- To enable Internet access in all dorms; fastest
Internet access at the Computer Laboratory
- To switch old telephone technology to Centrex
system technology giving each student his or her own
telephone number .
- To complete the installation of security cameras and student identification card swipe-in access systems in all dorms.
- To continue remodeling reading rooms.
- To inspect and replace, if necessary, fire
extinguishers and water boiling machines .
- To build new dorms to keep up with increasing
student population.
- To add sprinklers and air pumps to ease humidity
discomfort.
| |
HOUSING IS INSUFFICIENT, as the university lacked funds to build new dorms, the number of students residing in old dorms decreased while the number of students increased. Results: |
- Plans for two new dorms which can house 1,500
students were not approved.
- Each department sets rules for their student's
dorms; exchange students have first-year student housing
rights.
- Increase account investigations to more fairly
distributed housing.
- Renovate dorms to students' satisfaction.
| |
SLOW ENFORCEMENT OF RULES & REGULATIONS Solutions: |
- Allow students to make repairs costing under NT$6,000 with the permission of dorm director.
- Schedule dorm maintenance.
- Use computerized system to handle housing affairs.
- Post Student Housing Rules & Regulations on the
web and BBS for students.
- Increase job efficiency.
- Change housing application method from paper to
online.
| |
SAFETY ISSUES |
Male dorms do not have security guards while female dorms
do. Due to increasing request for gender equality and the wish
of students to expand their freedom dorms are now accessible
through monitored student identification card swipe-in.
|
All dorms are directly connected to Campus Police, the
police department, and the fire department.
|
(8) Future and Present Activities
- To convert Graduate Dorms to College Dorms will help
housing in college sector
- To promote patriotism within students. Help students by
making work study available to needy students and providing
counseling
- To remodel old dorms and solve housing shortage
- Services Department continues to handle problems
regarding dorms
- To change two new elevators, increase power supply in
dorms so students may install and pay for their own air
conditioning
- To continue to give students counsels in physical and emotional aspects
- To create more dorms to house newer majors
- To keep contact with security personnel to ensure
students safety
- Students and parents should first consult the dorm
resident director, then proceed to the Student Housing
Management Resident Director Department, and lastly to Student
