Music
Therapy
After the second half of
20th century, music therapy is thought of as the professional use of music as
an intervention in medical or other environments. The clients come from a wide
range of ages, including the elder people. Recent brain-imaging studies and
clinical research suggest that the brain areas responsible for the therapeutic
effects of music are usually located in the frontal lobe, including the
premotor cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, ventrolateral prefrontal
cortex, and medial prefrontal cortex. We are currently investigating how sentimental
ballads impact listeners’ negative experiences. Preliminary results suggest
that the ventral prefrontal areas play a key role in cognitive reappraisal and
self-reflection.
