Description:

This workshop will examine the fundamentals of both the art and the craft of stage management. We will consider the philosophical, stylistic, and technical aspects of stage management in conjunction with the production process, engaging the five phases of production. Actors’ Equity Association, the union governing professional work by actors and stage managers in the United States will be used as a case study for exploring how structure influences stage management technique.

We will work with the following definition throughout the workshop:

Stage Management is a complex, highly specialized, and frequently misunderstood field. Stage managers are the conductors of the theatrical process. In a traditional setting, the work is on a continuum throughout the five phases of production: pre-‐production, rehearsals, technical rehearsals, previews and performance. As the only collaborator involved in all phases, the stage manager supplies the artistic continuity, creatively orchestrating the unfolding of process. The stage manager takes the words and compositions of others and interprets them, using a unique approach. They artfully Integrate the needs of a production as well as the personalities of all collaborators. The stage manager is the fulcrum of the production process and is responsible for the synthesis of all elements of performance.

Objective:

To explore how a stage manager interfaces with various collaborators during the multiple phases of theatrical production and infuses various techniques into cultivating an individual working style.
