生態學、生態系統功能、生物多樣保育、生態復育、統計學、生物監測系統、生態工法
任老師從事水文生態學相關之研究多年，專長包括生態及生物工程範疇，從基礎生態學到生態系統與環境變遷之模擬，以及環境評估及管理、生態復育與生物多樣性之保育等不同領域。曾參與多項國際性的環境政策支援研究計劃，其中包括歐盟(European Union) 之水政策架構指令(Water Framework Directive) 和歐洲多國(包括英國、法國人、意大利、丹麥、挪威、愛沙尼亞與斯洛伐克)合作之研究計劃: 地表水水質與生態之關係(REBECCA Project) 等。近年針對台灣河溪及溼地生態系統模式、過程及功能進行多方面之研究。主要研究成果包括：

天然及人工溼地生態系統中之能量傳輸及生態功能；
-
河川生態流量(E-flow)；
-
河川生態系統對水文極端變化之反應，及其與生境結構和水力學之關係；
-
水貌學及養分富集與水生植物群落結構之量化關係；
-
建立多變量統計模擬以量化及預測棲地改變對河川生態系統之影響；
-
亞洲熱帶河川系統之基礎生態學(包括族群生態學、食物網結構、族群遺傳學)
-
大型水生無脊椎生物(水生昆蟲及甲殼類)分類學之研究。
