String Theory, Quantum Field Theory, Mathematical Physics

I am particularly interested in the structure of space-time and that of gauge symmetries.

I am interested in seeing how the notion of space-time, and some of its properties, can be derived from a fundamental theory such as string theory, rather than just accepting them as assumptions.

Why, for example, is the geometry of space-time characterized by the notion of length? (As a result, Einstein's theory of gravity is based on Riemannian geometry.)

I am also interested in the algebraic structure of gauge symmetries, which is often related to the properties of space-time (e.g. the diffeomorphism symmetry in general relativity.)

In modern physics, fundamental interactions are dictated by gauge symmetries. I like to explore the possibility that there are other gauge symmetries, different from the familiar ones, playing an important role in the natural laws of physics.
