COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is a required undergraduate course of the department of social work. In the field of social work, Human Behavior and the Social Environment is the curriculum area that provides the foundation of knowledge needed for a basic understanding of human adaptation. This course focuses on identifying concepts that can aid practitioners in improving the fit between the behavior of people and the demands and constraints imposed on them by their environments. The format of the course includes lecture, discussion, and student oral presentation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To apply knowledge about dimensions of human function while respecting variations in gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation.
To offer students an integrated framework (biological, psychological, and social) for approaching each developmental stage.
To understand the attributes and characteristics of people, as well as the kinds of changes they undergo across the life span.

REQUIRED TEXT:
Ashford, J. B., Lecroy, C. W., & Lortie, K. L. (2001). Human Behavior in the Social Environment: A multidimensional perspective (2nd ed.). Brooks/Cole Publishing Company.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS OF INSTRUCTOR
The instructor will use a variety of instructional methods including performing mini-lectures, interactive exercises, videos, PowerPoint, to reach students with a variety of learning styles. The instructor will provide structure for sessions through clarifying objectives, facilitating discussion focusing on critical assessment of issues, providing appropriate summaries and linkages to preceding and subsequent content. The instructor is willing to answer students' questions both during class and off class.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS
Punctuality, attendance, and active participation are expected. Students are required to read all readings before class and to participate in class discussion. Participation and preparation are critical to group activities. Students are also expected to complete assignments on due dates.
