Taiwan, situated in subtropical and tropical Asia, is an island of 36,000 km2 and with coastal line stretching 1,100 km. The highest mountain, Yushan, is about 4,000 m. Due to the high elevation difference, the climates are very different along the altitudinal gradient, producing a diverse and abundant wild fauna and flora. Geologically speaking, since Taiwan is a relatively young island, volcanic activity, gorge cleaving and rock formation are wonders still in action today. The Chinese culture that has been well preserved on the island has also intrigued its foreign visitors.

With that, College of Bioresources and Agriculture, National Taiwan University (CBA-NTU) is holding the "Biodiversity, Agriculture, and Culture of Taiwan Summer Program" for you to explore in Taiwan. All the courses and field trips of this program will be conducted in English. During the program, we will bring you from the ocean up to low, mid, and high elevations, where you will see why and how a small island could be endowed with such high biodiversity. We'll also arrange for you to visit the world famous National Palace Museum, to get hands-on experiences with the bamboo and tea culture, as well as the Chinese calligraphy and language. You'll have taste of the Taiwanese delicacies and even the chance to make some by yourself! Shopping and eating at night market is another activity for you to experience.

Students of partner universities of CBA-NTU can also participate a ONE-MONTH INTERNSHIP. However, you MUST participate in the BACT program before you consider to take part in the internship. Credit should be confirmed and acknowledged by your home university before you take part in. Partner university and the contact person of CBA-NTU are:

The Design of the BACT Summer Program Can be Divided into Four Part

At the beginning in Taipei City, the course puts its focus on Taiwan’s culture and the nature of Taipei’s suburban area, from visiting museums, Chiang-Kei Shek Memorial Hall, temple and Chinese learning, to exploring volcanic site, hot spring area, mountain flora and fauna, visiting geography park, observing intertidal creatures, experiencing yourself in the intertidal zone and cooking rice of different varieties~have a good appetite! Then we will head to east coast to learn more about orchid industry, visit fishery port, explore the gorgeous Taroko Gorge and hike on its trails.

In the second part, we will quickly climb up to the high mountain area and spend your nights in NTU’s Meifeng farm and Endemic Species Research Center, Council of Agriculture, to learn more about wild animals, the management of temperate fruit, and the flora and fauna in the temperate region. You will also experience yourself with aboriginal culture and hike on the 3,400 meter east peak of Hehuan Mountain.

In the third session, you will learn Taiwan’s tea culture and visit the tea farm in Nantou County, the only administrative area not adjacent to the sea in Taiwan. Later on, students will be grouped and work as a team to conduct a 4-day preliminary project in NTU’s Sitou Experimental Forest. The topic of the project for each team will be an eclectic result of discussion of your team members, which was mainly based on what you learned since the beginning of the program. Here in Sitou, our lecturers will show you around the forest area and present you the knowledge of Taiwan’s birds, soil biodiversity and ecological engineering.

In the final part, we, on the way back to Taipei, will stop by the Earthquake Museum of Taiwan to learn about the colossal force of the mother earth, which once caused an ever most serious damage to the central Taiwan. We will later visit the Agricultural Research Institute and the guide there will show you Taiwan’s agriculture and the current development. Back to Taipei, you will spend most of your time discussing the project with your team members and work together to finalize it. For the last few days, we also arrange you to visit Taipei City Zoo and to attend one more lecture regarding food security and economic development. When the final day comes, it is time for each team to give a presentation. A farewell dinner banquette will be held at the end of the day.
