1."Allegro non troppo"
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), Sonata for
Cello and Piano no. 1 in E minor
Brahms composed this sonata between the
years 1862 and 1865, and thus it is one
of his earlier chamber works and indeed
the earliest for piano and another solo
instrument (he later wrote a further sonata
for cello and piano, as well as three for
violin and piano and two for clarinet and
piano). The music of the first movement
typifies the extraordinary balance in much
of Brahms' works between poignant sentiment
(e.g. the memorable sweep of the opening
melody) and rationalist, constructivist
procedures (e.g. the frequent contrapuntal
imitations between the two soloists).

2."Allegro con brio"
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), Sonata Cello
and Piano no. 5 in D major
Dating from 1814, this sonata lies on the
verge of
Beethoven's so-called late period, during
which the aging composer
produced some of the most individual and idiosyncratic
works in the
entire tradition of European music. The dynamic
and mercurial first
movement offers a highly intense and evidently
personal drama, once
again illustrating Beethoven's historical
importance as a principal initiator
of the Romanticist aesthetic in music.
