    Paper Title and Abstract
‘Reconstructing’ Tibetan Buddhism: Li Anzhai and the development of Modern Education in Labrang Monastery.

During the War of Resistance (1937-45) the Chinese borderlands became the focus of a number of modernizing projects which attempted to integrate both territory and ethnic groups under the unifying banner of Chinese nationalism. Such projects had acquired a high strategic value as the Guomindang government deemed the fostering of loyalties in these regions as a vital priority. Although such projects varied, they ultimately espoused the discursive element of ‘reconstruction’ [jianshe] to illustrate the extent to which the borderlands and its inhabitants could be transformed. As flocks of scholars escaping from war-torn China arrived to the region and began working alongside GMD officials, a myriad of modernizing strategies emerged which drew upon a wide range of anthropological and sociological theories. In effect, regions such as the Sino Tibetan borderlands posed a particular challenge due to the complexities involved in understanding the interaction of different ethnic groups and the function that religion played in these dynamics. This paper discusses the role played by a Chinese anthropologist, Li Anzhai, and his efforts to build a new Tibetan identity through the creation of a modern educational model based on his studies at Labrang monastery during the wartime period. In contrast to many who saw Tibetan Buddhism as a barrier to modernization, Li’s functionalist approach attempted to recast religion as an essential element of ethnic identity while at the same time being compatible with the demands of a modern society.
