| The talk begins with a brief introduction to the nature
of sign language. It then discusses cognitive functioning in deaf adults
and children, based on Marschark & Spencer 2003. The discussion highlights
the differences between the deaf and the hearing with respect to (1) visual
attention and perception, (2) visual imagery and visual cognition, (3)
working memory, (4) long-term memory, (5) relational and individual-item processing, and (6)problem solving. It is to be pointed out that acquisition of sign language plays a crucial role in the cognitive development of the deaf children. The talk thus ends with a critical review of deaf education in Taiwan. |
| When people talk face-to-face, they often create spontaneous gestures by hands and arms, head and face, and eye gaze. These bodily movements play an important role in communication, as they cooperate with speech to express meaning. This talk will first introduce the methodological issues, including transcription and phases of gesturing. Then, two fundamental issues of gesturing in speaking will be addressed. The first is categorizing gestures into five types in face-to-face interaction: iconic gestures, metaphoric gestures, deictic gestures, spatial gestures, and beats. The second issue concerns how speech and gesture are patterned temporally in conveying information. Different timing relations were found with reference to temporal phases, gesture types, pauses, and fluency of speech. |
