講題The early MEG markers for reading Chinese phonograms: evidence from radical combinability and consistency effects

主講人Dr. Chun‐Hsien Hsu

The Institute of Linguistics, Academia Sinica

The purpose of this talk is to describe how event‐related potentials (ERPs) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) can elucidate the

: processes of visual word recognition. Both technics have a temporal resolution in milliseconds to index stages of word recognition. For example, studies of reading alphabetic words have indicated that the N170 reflects the perceptual expertise of words, and the P200 is associated with extracting phonological information in the sublexical level. On the other hand, using MEG data can help to localize neural generators supporting the brain activities with a high spatial and temporal resolution. Our previous ERP studies of reading Chinese phonograms have demonstrated that the radical‐level information is accessed in the early stages of character recognition. In addition, the results of the source analysis with the MEG data suggest that early activities in recognizing characters were supported by a network of brain regions, including the bilateral fusiform gyrus, the left anterior insula, the left middle temporal cortex, and the left inferior parietal cortex.
