Geographically, Taiwan is a sub-tropical island south of Japan and east of China. Just 13,900 square miles in size, it has more than 250 mountains, some of which are over 10,000 feet high. As a result, Taiwan boasts a wide variety of natural landscapes from sea shore to mountain, from tropical to alpine, as well as a correspondingly diverse fauna and flora, many of which are endemic to the region. Ethnically, most of Taiwan’s 23 million people are descended from immigrants who arrived from different parts of China at least half of a century ago, but there are also flourishing aboriginal cultures, which make for a diversity of life styles. To encourage conference participants to better enjoy the many natural wonders, ancient artifacts, cultural legacies, and the wide variety of traditional cuisine, three alternative conference tours have been organized for Wednesday afternoon 25 June, 2008 (1) the National Palace Museum, (2) Yangmingshan National Park, or (3) The Marine Research Station (ICOB, Academia Sinica). These events are sponsored by FHS. Participants only need to pay partially.
