The Precision Instrumentation Center was officially established on May 1, 1996 upon approval of the Ministry of Education. The Center was transformed from a project oriented service core facility center supported by the National Science Council during the years of 1981 - 1996. The goal of the Center remains the same: to purchase instruments not affordable to most research institutes and to provide high quality services using those instruments for the research community in northern Taiwan .

The Instrumentation Center provides the state-of-the-art instruments to be shared for academic research within affiliated communities. Experienced consulting specialists and operators were recruited to maintain high performance of the instruments. The service demands for various instrumentations have remained high over the years; therefore, by incorporating funding from the NSC and the university, the Center purchases new instruments constantly and refurbishes older models gradually.

The objectives of the Center are (1) to integrate the manpower and equipment to support basic and applied research locally, (2) to carry out research projects related to the research and development of the instrumentation, and (3) to extend the service to ensure efficient use of the instruments. For Marine Exploration, there is a university-owned research vessel ¡§ Ocean Researcher I ¡¨.
