Following the reorganization of the College of Sciences after the World War II, the Department of Mathematics was established in 1945, offering mathematics education at the undergraduate level. Soon the need for advanced mathematics education became apparent. The graduate program was created in 1960 with the first masterˇ¦s degree students entering in the same year. The first doctoral degree students were admitted in 1976.

Since mathematics represents the most fundamental building block of all modern sciences, a thorough understanding of mathematics is an indispensable tool for every professional scientist and engineer. In our dynamic society today, mathematics and its innumerable applications have at the same time become ubiquitous and permeated many different professional sectors such as the fields of finance or insurance. From its very beginning the department strongly believes that the ability to think clearly and analytically is crucial for every successful career. With this in mind the curricula are designed to nurture our students and provide a solid grounding to develop and enhance their analytical talents to the utmost, regardless of their future career choices. The department is proud to count among its alumni some of the most distinguished leaders in academia, business and industry today.

In the past, mathematics education put emphasis on the classical areas of mathematics, such as algebra, analysis and geometry. Recently, with the advent of the information age, the department has started to recruit outstanding mathematicians with research interests in applied and computational mathematics and statistical sciences. Today, the department offers many courses in these areas, along with the more traditional areas of study, in order to enrich the educational experience of its students.

The department is equipped with excellent research facilities for its faculty members and students alike. Its library subscribes to over 400 periodicals and houses over 54,000 volumes of books, and is regarded as the finest university library in the nation. At the same time its computing facilities are updated constantly. It also houses the Center for Theoretical Sciences Mathematics Division Taipei Office, which enables it to attract many leading mathematicians as short- or long-term visitors on a regular basis.

In 2007 the construction of the new Astronomy and Mathematics Building is scheduled to be completed, and will bring with it a new and exciting era for mathematics in Taiwan. It will house the Departments of Astronomy and Mathematics of the National Taiwan University and the Institute of Astronomy and Mathematics of Academia Sinica. This concentration of resources will create a large and strong research community in mathematics in Taipei, and at the same time tighten the collaboration between the department and the Institute of Mathematics of Academia Sinica. To further this bond a Mathematical Sciences Research Center is in the planning stage.
