The Chinese Language Division in the language center of National Taiwan University (NTU) was established in October 1984. It offers programs on Mandarin Chinese language training and facilitated research projects in this field.
At the initial stage, only two programs, the “Chinese Program for Foreign Students” and the “Research Core Course,” were offered in our division. However, due to the radically growing trend of foreigners learning Chinese in recent years, the foreign universities that have signed the agreement on educational cooperation with NTU, or those that will attempt to work with NTU in the future, express their wishes to send students here to learn Chinese. To cater to the rising trend of international cultural exchanges, to enable overseas Chinese people to better understand our country, to facilitate foreigners in learning Mandarin and Chinese dialects, and also to support the demand of Chinese language teachers, our division started to provide Chinese courses to the public in 2000.

Currently, the courses include the following:
(1) Mandarin studies program
This program teaches Chinese language to foreign students. The class consists of regular, paying students and also of exchange students, as arranged by our International Academic Exchange Center. The terms begin every spring, summer, fall and winter. The spring, summer and autumn terms last for 12 weeks and the winter term lasts only 10 weeks. The courses are offered based on the Chinese level of each student. Each class is composed of about 4 to 6 people to ensure that each member improves greatly in listening, speaking, reading and writing in the class.
In 2005, a new course for new international students was offered. The qualified students are the registered international students of NTU. The course starts and ends simultaneously with the university semester; two terms per year, 6 hours of class per week, and 4 to 6 students per class.

(2) Chinese teacher training course
The course is offered to those who wish to learn the Chinese teaching methodology and practical teaching. The course is open to Taiwanese university graduates or current Chinese teachers. Four classes are offered per year to future Chinese teachers. There are about 35 students in each class. Recently, more and more have been coming to register for the class. To cater to the market need, more classes will be offered, or more students will be allowed into each class.

The head of our division is the head professor of the Chinese Department at NTU. The previous heads were Fu-Chang Hsu, Chen-Feng Tsai, Chih-Hsin Chen, Li-li Chang, Fei-Pang Chao and Ting Liang. Currently, the position is being served by Wu Zhen-Xun .
