	This paper investigates the impact of introducing online firms into a market alongside physical firms on the equilibrium levels of quality research and development (R&D) and optimal regulated prices. By introducing an online firm such that competition in the market becomes more severe, we derive the following interesting results. First, we show that intensifying competition by introducing online firms will lower the equilibrium level of quality R&D compared with the case in the absence of online firms if the distaste cost is low; the reverse occurs otherwise. Second, the optimal regulated price for the physical firm in the presence of online firms becomes lower. Meanwhile, it equals the optimal regulated price for the online firm plus the marginal cost of the physical firm. Third, intensifying competition by increasing the number of physical firms (lowering transportation costs) leads to a decline (increase) in the quality of R&D efforts by physical firms. Lastly, an increase in the number of physical firms results in decreased regulated prices for both physical firms and online firms.
