摘要 Abstract of the Paper |
This
study examines a licensing game in a durable goods market where a patent
holder with a nondrastic cost-reducing innovation
strategically grants a license to a competitor. In contrast to the optimal
pure royalty contract in the benchmark case for non-durable goods, the
optimal licensing contract in the durable goods setting takes the form of a
two-part tariff, shaped by the intertemporal structure of durable licensing
revenue. Moreover, the analysis shows that consumer welfare is generally
lower under licensing. The durability of the good tends to reduce the
final-stage price and the licensor’s profit, while its effect on the
initial-stage price and the licensee’s profit depends on the market
conditions, potentially increasing or decreasing them. This study further
examines several extensions, including semi-drastic innovations, product differentiation,
the existence of a resale market, ad valorem royalty contracts, and price
competition under pre-commitment strategies. |
