Is trade liberalization beneficial? This is one of the central topics in international economics. This paper reconsiders Clarke and Collie¡¦s(2003) result in Hotelling¡¦s (1929) spatial model of differentiated Bertrand duopoly, which is another benchmark model in industrial organization.

Constructing a tow-country Hotelling model of spatial duopoly, this paper explores welfare effects of bilateral reductions in transport cost. This paper show that welfare in trade is necessarily less than welfare in autarky for any level of trade cost, which sharply contrasts Clarke and Collie (2003) prove Pareto superiority of any trade over autarky in a non-address model.
