論文提要 |
While previous papers
on R&D have considered the effect of cooperation on R&D investment,
the effect of the size of an innovation on the incentive for cooperation has
been ignored. In this paper we show how the size of an innovation can affect
the incentive for cooperative R&D and social welfare. We show that firms will
prefer to do cooperative R&D when cost reduction from R&D is not sufficiently
large. Cooperative R&D helps the constituent firms to produce with the
same technology and this has a positive effect on social welfare. If the
benefit from cooperative R&D is sufficiently large compared to the
benefit from large cost reduction, social welfare will be more under small innovation
compared to large innovation. This contradicts previous results of the
literature showing higher (lower) welfare from large (small) innovation.
However, the innovating firm always prefers large innovation compared to
small innovation. |
