摘要

Holahan (1975, AER) sets up a linear market model in which consumers are uniformly distributed along a linear market and are price-discriminated by a monopolist. It is found that social welfare is higher under discriminatory pricing than uniform mill pricing as the market area of the former is larger than the latter. This paper extends the Holahan framework to a vertically-related industry to examine the welfare effect of spatial price discrimination in an upstream market. It is found that, for price discrimination in an upstream market, the welfare ranking of the two pricing policies is reversed. Social welfare is necessarily lower under discriminatory pricing than under uniform mill pricing, which is contrary to that in Holahan (1975), This is because the welfare gains from serving more market area under discriminatory pricing than mill pricing shrinks due to double marginalization, making the former socially undesirable than the latter. Furthermore, this result is generally robust even if the production technology of the downstream firms exhibits increasing or decreasing returns to scale.
