This study examines the impact on an outside patentee¡¦s licensing decision by considering an upstream supplier in the basic model by Kamien and Tauman (1986).  The outside patentee in this study can receive profits by means of either fixed-fee or royalty licensing methods.  It is possible for the outside patentee to choose the royalty licensing method.  This result compares to Kamien and Tauman (1986) in which without an upstream supplier a fixed-fee licensing method is always the optimal licensing strategy for an outside patentee.
