Factor Growth and the Factor Price Equalization: a CES Case

This paper is an extension of a working paper written by Choi (2006), which concludes that wherever labor growth occurs, terms of trade in the North improve, and that the relative wage rate is convex combination of ones before trade, that is, the equalized relative factor price is a linear combination of the autarky relative factor prices of the two countries. The present study examined the role of effectiveness of functional form from Cobb-Douglas to CES. Our objective in this paper is to discuss whether the general results will be true in a CES case. We also clearly connect the Choi’s results to the impact of the terms of trade on factor growth through a geographical analysis, which is based on the work of Batra and Pattanaik (1971).

結論

The equalized factor prices are the linear combination of autarky factor prices in the two countries, but we cannot assure it is able to less convex for complicacy. The form of combination of factor prices and coefficient form still the same with Choi. If reducing the parameters of elasticity of substitution of production and utility functions, the results will be completely the same with Choi.

延伸研究

The way of calculation in Arrow et. al. (1961) may not be suitable for general equilibrium analysis, but may adopt the traditional way to solve the solution of general equilibrium problem.
