討論提要 |
Allow quality variation in a duopoly of locationally
differentiated products a-la-Hotelling (1929); analyze the impact of quality
variations on the choices of the varieties produced. |
||
結論 |
(1) Contrary to the intuition
of the ‘principle of minimum differentiation’, firms prefer to maximally
differentiate their products in the variety space so that they can achieve
higher levels of quality, price and profits. (2) It is striking to see that the simple addition of
quality as a strategic variable to the classic model of variety
differentiation leads to maximal differentiation, a result directly opposite
to the ‘Principle of Minimum Differentiation’ |

延伸研究 |

the effect of “variety cost of product” on location and quality choices. |
