討論提要

This manuscript employs a two-stage model, in which two firms sequentially choosing their quality levels in the first stage and then sequentially choosing prices in the second stage. The purpose of this manuscript is to compare the differences of the firms’ quality levels, prices, profits, consumers’ surplus and welfare among Motta (1993), Aoki and Prusa (1996), and this paper.

結論

1.      The high quality of this paper is in-between those of Motta (1993) and Aoki and Prusa (1996), while the low quality the highest.

2.      The prices of both low and high quality products in this paper are all the highest among the three papers.

3.      The profit of the high quality firm in this paper is the lowest, while that of the low quality firm is the highest. Moreover, the aggregate profit of this paper is the lowest.

4.      The consumer surplus and the social welfare are all in-between the other two papers.

5.      This paper proves that when the price leader has a quality advantage of choosing the quality level first, he will earn a higher profit than the price follower. This overturns the conventional wisdom that the price leader is always earning lower profit.

延伸研究

1.      Find support from the related papers that the weighted average quality can be used to measure the social welfare and consumer surplus.

2.      Figure out a better way to measure the aggregate profit.
