討論提要

We discussed what the network externalities effects are first. Followed by the definition of Katz and Shapiro (1985) , the network externalities effects come from three sources. First, the consumption externalities may be generated through a direct physical effect of the number of purchasers on the quality of the product. Second, the network externalities may come from equipment support systems. For example, when more the software is supported, more the utility consumers can get from purchasing a computer. Third, positive consumption externalities arise for a durable good when the quality and availability of post purchase service for the good depend on the experience and size of the service network.

We discussed Katz and Shapiro’s the model afterwards. Katz and Shapiro built their model form a fundamental work. I introduced what the Fulfilled Expectations Cournot Equilibrium is and how to get the equilibrium in the monopoly and oligopoly market.

結論

Under the Fulfilled Expectations Cournot Equilibrium, Katz and Shapiro can solve the equilibrium in the monopoly and oligopoly market with network externalities. Their paper is a milestone in network economics.
