討論提要

This paper points out that there are two fatal mistakes in Hamilton et al.’s (1989) paper, which lead to an incorrect conclusion made by them, i.e., two firms will agglomerate at the middle point of the market line segment under Cournot competition. This happens because the authors miss considering a competition effect in the determination of the firms’ optimal location.

結論

This paper shows that two firms will take apart under Cournot competition if the transport rate is high, but agglomerate at the middle point of the line segment otherwise. A well recognized argument made by Hamilton et al. (1989) and Anderson and Neven (1991) in regional science is modified in this paper.

延伸研究

1.      The restriction of the transport cost minimizing effect should be figured out.

2.      We should refer to the paper of Long and Soubeyran (1997) as explaining the intuition of the competition effect.

3.      We should find more papers on the topic of agglomeration under Cournot competition to strengthen our correction.
