討論提要

This manuscript employs a two-stage model involving the third-degree price discrimination with product differentiation. In stage 1, the two firms simultaneously choose the locations where their facilities settle in.  In stage 2, the firms take the third-degree price discrimination with Bertrand price competition. Two markets locate at the opposite side of a line market, respectively. The purpose of this manuscript is to compare the differences of the firm’s aggregate output, profits, consumers’ surplus and welfare between the price discrimination and uniform mill pricing.

結論

1.      Taking the third-degree price discrimination, the two firms would locate at the opposite side of the line market if the demand functions of the two markets are identical, while locating anywhere in the line market if the uniform mill pricing is prevalent.

2.      The aggregate outputs are identical between this two pricing.

3.      The mill price of the uniform pricing locates between the two prices of price discrimination.

4.      The profits of price discrimination are greater than those of the uniform mill pricing.

延伸研究

The difficulty faced in this manuscript is how to measure the consumers’ surplus while employing the uniform mill pricing. This arises because the firms may locate anywhere in the line market. We work out a resolution, in which a uniform probability of the firm’s location is used to figure out the expected consumers’ surplus.
