簡介: Archaeological excavations at Talasiu midden site, in Tonga, Western Polynesia, has revealed the oldest Polynesian burials known so far, dating to 2600 years ago. In this talk, the description of the burials at Talasiu, using principles and methodology of archaeothanatology, is contrasted with linguistic reconstructions of mortuary and ritual behaviors proposed for the Ancestral Polynesian Society, and with archaeological information on post 700 BP Tonga burial practices, highlighting the complexity of Polynesian culture formation.
