Reserach Interests
My research focuses on social order; more specifically, the order of complex societies. It is examined from five vantage points.

First is the social typology. I distinguish the different natures of social order between small-scale and large-scale societies. My main argument is that while the former could be based on kinship as its organizing principle, in a complex society where contact between strangers increase, kinship principle would no longer be enough to maintain social order. Something new must give rise to solve the stranger problem.

My second research focus on the concept of person. I argue there are different ways of dealing with the stranger problem. In a comparison between models of problem solving, I argue the mainstream of the West adopts a dualist model as the dominant strategy. In which a person is conceptually divided into two aspects. On the one hand, there are contingent social roles which separate people; on the other hand, it is assumed underneath the social masks individuals share same essence. Thus while one may be a stranger to another socially, they are equal brothers as individuals. Chinese of the Warring-States period dealt with the problem differently. They came up with a ladder structure which put people in various steps of a ladder that guides their interaction. However, one is able to change his/her ladder position through self-cultivation. Mobility is the hallmark of the ladder structure.

Thirdly, I want to find out whether anthropological analytical frameworks are based on the dualist model. I contend that the distinction between nature and culture, individual and social position (or social role) take the dualist model as its basis. I trace the duality of human universality and diversity to the Enlightenment and the subsequent Romanticism. The dualism in anthropological theories not only reflects a dominant strategy of the West in solving the stranger problem, it self-reproduces as anthropologists adopt them to analyze the world. This leaves the question of whether the dualism could provide a better understanding of another model in solving the stranger problem.

In recent studies of the body, the dualist model is called into question. My empirical works are mostly reflections and critiques of the dualist model, especially the concept of culture, from the perspective of the body. Moreover, they demonstrate how the ladder and one’s mobility on ladder are experienced through the body in self-cultivation of various sorts.

Lastly, I am interest in collective conflicts in the modern world. I argue in the wars between nation-states, religious conflicts or ethnic cleansings, people still treat others as strangers. While the dualist and the ladder models try to cope with the problem, it still haunts us in the 21th century. My studies on them are examinations of their pros and cons in solving the world problem on hand.
