Findings, Discoveries, Inventions:

l        NTU RDS (National Taiwan University Random-dot Stereograms) - for nationwide screening of school and preschool children.

l        NTU 300" (300 sec-arc) and NTU 35' (35 min-arc)

l        Reversing Grating test - A simple clinical tool to assess the naso-temporal symmetry of motion perception (Symmetry of monocular OKN and smooth pursuit). A lifelong marker for early- vs. late- onset of strabismus.

l        Binocular Depth-from-Motion - A more primitive binocular interaction than stereopsis (binocular depth-from-disparity). Infantile esotropia, if aligned later than 2 year-old, may recover this more primitive binocularity. That is, late surgery of early-onset strabismus may always have functional benefits, besides mere cosmetic consideration.

l        Photorefraction and Retinoscopy with Direct Ophthalmoscope and Laser Pointer. (Hand-held photorefractor)

NTURDS Windows Version
QuickBASIC programming under DOS environment has been abondoned by Microsoft after Win7. Many good things under DOS programming has not been upgraded into Windows system. And finally here comes QB64. Really good news for QuickBASIC lovers.
I programmed with QB64 to make Windows version of NTU RDS --
Chinese - http://homepage.ntu.edu.tw/~ahwang/NTU300JetLan/NTURDS中文.exe
English - http://homepage.ntu.edu.tw/~ahwang/NTU300JetLan/NTURDSEnglish.exe

NTURDS (for Windows) Mouse or Touch Screen Driven
New Version of NTURDS (National Taiwan University Randon-dot Stereograms)
They are Mouse or Touch Screen Driven and thus more fun.

For screening use, it requires 5 consecutive correct answers to pass the test.
As a 4-alternative-forced-choice test, the chance to pass each trial by guessing is 1/4.
The chance of 5 consecutive correct answers by guessing is 1/1024.
This criterion has been set up and used for years in Taiwan for visual screening of preschool and school children.

Motion Stereopsis Test (Windows version) is now available at
http://homepage.ntu.edu.tw/~ahwang/Motion%20Stereopsis/Motion%20Stereopsis.exe

As compared with its counterpart on web http://homepage.ntu.edu.tw/~ahwang/rnd-MD.html, the motion can be paused with <pause> key so that you'll see static stereograms in "Disparity cue only" and correlograms in "Motion cue only".

Those who are not familiar with Motion Stereopsis may visit Youtube for illustration --http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEoxO_RdGhE(English) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9PaE92JBKk(Chinese)

NTU RDS Android App
With great help of programer JetLan and sponsorship from Universal Foundation for the Education of Medical Service and Health Care, here comes the Android App of NTU Random-dot Stereograms. Enjoy,

New Design of NTU Random-dot Stereograms
http://homepage.ntu.edu.tw/~ahwang/NTU%20Windows%20Version/NTURDSTouchScreen.exe
It's driven by mouse or touch screen under Windows system.
Waiting for xPad run on Win8 to play this program even more fun.
2100 sec-of-arc (35 min-of-arc) is an imitator of 33 min-of-arc screening pages of TNO stereotests.
In my clinical work I have used these two cutoffs, 300” and 2100”, for long.
I explained to the patients or parents that those who passed 2100” yet failed 300” had not bad though not perfect stereopsis (subnormal stereopsis).
To my clinical experience, esophoria and anisometropia are two major categories with subnormal stereopsis.

Modification for Screening – 5 consecutive correct answers to pass the test (1/1024 chance to pass the test by guessing).
http://homepage.ntu.edu.tw/~ahwang/NTU%20Windows%20Version/NTURDSTouchScreenScreening.exe
In the past 15 years visual screening of school and preschool children in Taiwan applied two criteria - (1) distance visual acuity (o.6 for 4yo, 0.7 for 5yo and 0.8 for 6yo) and (2) NTU 300” stereopsis (5 consecutive correct answers to pass the test). (Dr. Luke L-K Lin's work)
